Kai’s POV
The whole night I was worrying if I’d done the right thing. I was scared that I’d overstepped, that Katana didn’t want to hear from me, that I’d messed up. Again.
A few minutes after Katana came out of the shower, I heard “Black Treacle” coming from her room. I smiled, happy that she was at least playing the CD.
I turned around, to see Yelena staring at me.
“Thank you. For getting her the CD. She loves the Arctic Monkeys.”
I nodded and smiled. “I know. So do I.” We both stood there in an awkward silence.
“Kai… I know you’re a good man. I know you never meant to hurt her.”
I wasn’t sure how to respond to that.
“She deserves someone like you. And you deserve her. She… I’ve never seen her as happy as she is when she’s with you.” I felt my cheeks get warm, and I smiled.
“Thank you, Yelena. Really.” She nodded, before walking into Katana’s room. I sat down on the couch, and finished the last chapter of Pride and Prejudice. After hearing Katana reading it, I had fallen in love with it, and couldn’t put it down. The only problem was it was so much better when Katana was reading it.
Once I’d finished it, I pulled a blanket around me and eventually fell asleep.
Katana’s POV
Yelena walked into my room, as I was sat on my bed listening to the Arctic Monkey’s CD. She sat on my legs at the end of my bed, and passed me a bag of crisps. I opened them, and ate a few, before offering the rest to Yelena.
“Hey, Kat. Are you gonna be ready for the mission?” I nodded, still dreading the idea of doing it with Kai.
“You don’t have to do it with Kai, we can find-“
“No.” I cut her off. “I don’t want to put anyone else in danger. We’ve already arranged to do it with him. I… I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?” I wasn’t sure. I was terrified of being near Kai. And yet I nodded, trying to seem confident, so that Yelena wouldn’t worry. She looked at me suspiciously, before giving me a hug and starting to walk out.
“It’s gonna be okay, Kat, I promise.”
The next day went past quickly. Yelena told me and Kai the plan. It was a fairly simple plan – break into the house, cause a distraction to get into the vents, jump down into his office, find the disc and anything else on his computer we could use to prove his guilt. I’d done missions like these 100’s of times, but it felt different this time. Because I was with Kai, because we were breaking into my own house, because the target was Dante. It all felt wrong. But we needed that disc, and the footage on there. Then we could finally prove what a dickhead my brother was to the rest of my family, and get rid of him once and for all. We spent the rest of the day memorising the layout of the vents – I knew most of them, as I’d hid in there lots when I was young, trying to avoid my father. Not that it ever worked. He would always find me. But Kai didn’t know the layout, so I had to explain the way to Dante’s office.
Kai would hide in a cupboard near Dante’s office that had access to the vents, whilst I stood at the other side of the house, and caused a distraction. Dante would come running, and we would both escape into the vents, and meet above his office. We would jump down while Dante was gone, and find the disc and any other evidence on his computer before escaping. It should be quick and easy. There was no need for anything to go wrong.
