2 weeks later
I lay on my bed, playing a game on my phone. We were back at the main house near New York. After we’d released the video, not much had changed. I was surprised, I thought people would have moved on by now. But I was still getting death threats daily from my family. It didn’t really bother me, though. I’d grown up living with things like this my whole life.
I looked over at Kai, who was sat curled up on the sofa in the corner of my room. He caught my gaze, and smiled, before running towards me, and jumping onto the bed next to me. I let out a squeal, and we both laughed.
“Watchya playing?” Kai asked, before grabbing my phone from my hands and rolling over. In return, I grabbed his phone, intrigued to see what was on it. I scrolled through his apps, but I didn’t see anything of interest. As I was looking, a notification popped up.
“Kai, your mom messaged. She’d asking if you want her to send some of your stuff over,” I told Kai as I read the message.
“Tell her I’ll come and get it in a few weeks.” I nodded, and clicked on the message. I sent a quick reply, and clicked out of the chat. I was about to go back to looking through Kai’s apps, when I saw Dante’s name, glowing up at me from the screen. I tapped on it, confused as to why Kai would be messaging my brother. My jaw dropped as I saw floods of messages between Kai and my brother, some from before I’d even met Kai.
“Kai...” I whispered, scared of what I’d just found.
“What’s wrong, Kat?”
“Kai, why have you been messaging Dante?” I slowly got up, and started backing away from Kai. I grabbed the gun from the table next to my bed, and pointed it at Kai, still reading through the messages. They mentioned my name lots, but I was too shocked to take in what the messages said.
“Katana, I can explain-“ Kai began to get up, and move towards me, but I stepped back and shook the gun at him.
“Don’t you dare move. And don’t you dare make up some bullshit excuse. Tell me the truth, or I swear to God, you will not live another minute. Kai, why have you been messaging Dante since before we met?” Kai got off the bed, and stood there, his raised besides his face in defence. He didn’t look scared. He looked calm, relaxed.
“Fine. You want the truth? As you know, our fathers were close. My father left me when I was 5. By the time I was 16, my life had gone to shit, and I decided I wanted to rekindle my relationship with my father. I tracked him down, and found him living in New York. I met up with him, and it turned out we had a lot in common. We got closer, and eventually my father introduced me to the mafia. Your family in particular. I started doing some jobs for them, just some small crimes. Then, I met Dante. We made a deal together. I help him get rid of you and Yelena, he pays me $1 million. Enough to cure my mom’s cancer. So, I went undercover, and started to work as a police officer. And then you kidnapped me, on Dante’s orders, with the fake case files. Then, the plan was for me to gain your trust, and build up a case against you. About your hatred for Dante, and for your father. If that was released, it would ruin you. You’d be killed for sure. And not only would you be dead, and out of Dante’s way, but it would serve as a warning for any other girls wanting to run the mafia. Then you gave us our best chance yet – a plot to end Dante. If we exposed you and that plot, there’s no chance your family would let you stay. And we even had proof that Yelena was involved – 2 birds with one stone. It would have worked perfectly, but I fucked it all up, and actually began to develop feelings for you. But I still carried on with the plans. I may have liked you, but the money was still more important to me than you could ever be.
“Once you told me that you wanted to kill Dante, I tried to stop you, but I realised that that was only bringing suspicion to me. And I would get the money, whether he was dead or alive. So you killed Dante. What a shame. But I didn’t care. Then we were escaping, but Robert stopped us. I actually didn’t have anything to do with Robert. That was just Dante’s backup plan, in case my plan didn’t work. If we couldn’t take you down, then he would just marry you off to Robert. However, if that happened, then I wouldn’t finish my mission, and I wouldn’t get the money. So I proposed, to save the mission. To save my money. And finally, the last part of the plan. You told me that you were still suspicious. You still thought Dante had one last plan. So, I forced Ollie to try and steal the disc. I knew he’d fail, but it would throw you off the track. Then, just when you were ready to release the tape, I switched them. You’ve been wondering why you’re family haven’t been congratulating you, or seeing you as the hero. It’s because you’re not. To them, you’re still the villain that you’ve always been. The tape that you released was edited, to show you as the villain, not Dante. We’d won. I did everything that I promised Dante. There was a contract, so whether he was dead or alive, I got the money if I completed his list of demands. I never cared who won, I just wanted the money. To save my mom. You’d understand that, wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t you do everything you could to save your mom?
“So, Katana. Now you know the truth. What are you going to do? Shoot me, the one person who ever loved and cared for you?”
I stood there, the gun shaking in my hand. My lip wobbled, but no tears ran down my face. I expected to feel something, anger, or sadness. But I didn’t. I felt empty. It was like I had been expecting this, all along, knowing I didn’t deserve love. I’d been hurt and betrayed too many times. Some people didn’t deserve their happy ever after. I didn’t deserve a happy ever after.
“You never loved me, Kai. You love yourself, and money, but no one else. Goodbye, Kai.” My finger hovered over the trigger, and I closed my eyes, before pressing down as hard as I could. I heard the bang of the bullet flying out the barrel. I felt the room shake as Kai’s limp body hit the floor. I opened my eyes, to seen blood seeping through my carpet, like ink on paper. I stood there, silent and still. I didn’t feel anything, except the cold, hard gun in my hand. I closed my eyes again, wishing everything would disappear. The next thing I knew, I felt the metal circle of the gun resting on my forehead, my fingers wrapped around the trigger. It felt relaxing, as if it quietened my thoughts.
I heard the door burst open, and turned around to see Yelena run in, panic on her face. I kept the gun held to my face, and watched, as if watching from afar, as Yelena’s eyes flicked from Kai’s body, to the gun in my hand, and to my face.
“Katana!” She screamed, tears forming in her eyes. “Katana, don’t do this! If you go through with this, he wins. They all do. Don’t let them win.” She was almost begging me.
“They already have won. They took everything from me. They took my life from me.” I said, no emotion in my voice. “At least this way, it’s my choice.”
My fingers tightened on the trigger. The last thing I saw was Yelena, running towards me. She was screaming, but her words became fainter and fainter. I closed my eyes, ready for the dark embrace of death to save me.
I pulled the trigger.
A/N: Guys I'm sorry for this ending! 😭 Hope you enjoyed it though, I'll hopefully upload another story soon!
