The night had fallen quiet over the city, but the silence in the room was shattered by the sound of Bucky's sudden gasp. He bolted upright in bed, his heart racing, drenched in a cold sweat. His breaths came in ragged gasps as the remnants of the nightmare clung to him, pulling him back into those dark memories. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying to shake them away, but the fear lingered, gnawing at his chest.
In his regressed state, everything felt bigger and scarier, and right now, Bucky felt impossibly small. His mind had slipped back to the time when he was a child, lost and afraid, seeking comfort he couldn't find in the shadows of his dream. His eyes darted around the room, searching for something, someone—then they landed on you, resting peacefully next to him.
You stirred as you felt Bucky shifting beside you. You weren't fully awake yet, but the quiet sob that escaped his lips pulled you into consciousness immediately. Your heart clenched at the sight of him, curled up on the bed, clutching the blanket to his chest, his whole body trembling.
"Buck?" you whispered softly, your voice warm and soothing in the stillness of the room. "You okay?"
He didn't answer right away, just a small shake of his head as he tried to wipe away the tears that had started to spill down his cheeks. In his little headspace, everything felt overwhelming. His big, strong soldier self was gone, replaced by the scared little boy who needed comfort.
You sat up slowly, reaching out a hand to gently stroke his arm. "Hey, it's okay. You're safe," you murmured, keeping your tone soft and calm. "I'm right here."
Bucky sniffled, his lower lip trembling as he tried to be brave, but the fear from the nightmare still gripped him tight. "It was really bad..." he whispered, his voice barely audible. "I don't wanna be alone..."
Your heart broke at the vulnerability in his voice, and without a second thought, you scooted closer to him, wrapping your arms around his trembling form. "You're not alone, Buck. I've got you," you assured him, holding him tight as he buried his face in your chest.
He let out a soft sob, clinging to you as if you were his lifeline. "It was so scary... bad people were chasin' me... they got me again," he mumbled into your shirt, his words slurred with exhaustion and fear.
You rested your chin gently on top of his head, continuing to rub soothing circles on his back. "It was just a dream, sweetheart," you whispered, kissing the top of his hair softly. "You're safe now. I promise."
Bucky sniffled again but nodded, his breathing slowly starting to even out as your words sank in. "Don't let them get me," he whispered, his voice still shaky, but a little calmer now.
"I won't let anything happen to you, Bucky. Not ever," you said, tightening your embrace. "I'm right here, and I'll keep you safe, okay? No one's gonna hurt you."
For a while, you just held him, letting him find comfort in your arms as his trembling slowly subsided. Bucky was always so strong, so unshakable to the rest of the world, but you knew how much he needed these moments of softness, especially when he was regressed. You were the one person he trusted to keep him safe, no matter how small and vulnerable he felt.
As the minutes passed, you felt Bucky relax in your embrace. His breathing had become steady, and his grip on your shirt loosened slightly as he melted into you. You could tell he was still a little shaken, but the worst of the fear had passed.
"You wanna lie back down, Buck?" you asked quietly, your voice full of care.
Bucky nodded but didn't pull away from you. He was still clinging to the warmth and safety you provided. You guided him gently back down to the bed, never letting go of him. As soon as he was lying down, he tugged on your sleeve, his blue eyes wide and pleading.
"Can you stay close?" he asked in the smallest voice, his cheeks flushed with embarrassment. He always worried he was being too needy when he was little, though you never once minded.
"Of course, Buck," you whispered, lying down beside him and pulling him close again. "I'm not going anywhere."
Bucky snuggled into your side, his head resting on your chest, his fingers curling into your shirt like he was afraid you'd slip away if he didn't hold on tight enough. You wrapped your arm around him, holding him securely in your embrace. With your other hand, you gently stroked his hair, the rhythmic motion helping to lull him back into a state of calm.
"You're my hero," he murmured sleepily, his voice soft and small.
You smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "No, Buck. You're the hero. I'm just here to remind you of that," you said tenderly.
Bucky let out a content sigh, the last traces of fear slipping away as he nestled further into your arms. He felt so safe, so loved, and the nightmare felt like a distant memory now, something that couldn't touch him while you were there.
As the night went on, Bucky drifted back into sleep, this time peaceful and untroubled. You stayed with him, holding him close, listening to the soft sound of his breathing, knowing that as long as you were there, nothing could harm him.
You pressed a gentle kiss to his forehead and whispered, "Sweet dreams, Bucky."
And this time, you knew his dreams would be filled with nothing but love and safety.
