Tony sat on the couch, tucked under a soft blanket with a stuffed bear in his lap. His small hands fidgeted with the bear's paw, his eyes downcast. Wanda had gone to answer a call in the other room, leaving him alone for a moment. It wasn't uncommon for him to be left alone for short periods—he was used to that. But somehow, in this moment, a wave of insecurity washed over him. He always feared being abandoned, and though Wanda had never done that, the thought lingered in the back of his mind.
His heart started to race, a small knot forming in his stomach. He hugged the stuffed bear tighter, biting his lip, his eyes welling up with tears.
Wanda walked back into the room, her voice light and soothing. "Tony? You okay, little one?" She noticed the distant look in his eyes, the way he clutched the bear like it was his only anchor to the world.
Tony didn't respond at first. He was trying so hard not to let it show, but the vulnerability was overwhelming. He swallowed hard, looking up at her with those big, questioning eyes.
"Wanda," he said softly, his voice trembling. "Would you leave me?" His words were barely above a whisper, but the fear in them was clear.
Wanda stopped in her tracks, her heart dropping at the sight of Tony's expression. He looked so small, so fragile, like he was carrying the weight of all the abandonment he had experienced in his life. It hurt her to see him this way, but she knew she couldn't avoid the conversation any longer.
She knelt down in front of him, gently lifting his chin with her fingers so that he had to meet her gaze. "Tony," she said, her voice calm but firm, "I'm not going anywhere. I won't leave you, okay?"
Tony's lip quivered, and despite his best efforts, a few tears slipped down his cheeks. "But... but you might. You might go away and not come back."
Wanda's heart ached at the rawness of Tony's words. She knew how deep his fears of abandonment ran, how they were tangled with the hurt from his past. It was something she could never fix completely, but she could at least try to help him feel safe in the moment.
"Tony," Wanda said gently, brushing his hair out of his face, "I will always come back. You are so important to me, and nothing is going to change that. I know sometimes it's scary when people leave, but I promise, I'm not going anywhere."
Tony sniffled, shaking his head a little. "But... what if you get tired of me? Or if I'm too much?" His voice cracked as he spoke, the insecurities bubbling to the surface.
Wanda softened, pulling him into a tight hug. "Tony, you're never too much for me. You're exactly who you're supposed to be. I will always be here to take care of you, no matter what."
Tony clung to her, his small body trembling as he buried his face in her shoulder. "Promise?" he whispered, his voice so small and fragile.
"I promise," Wanda murmured, kissing the top of his head. She held him for a long time, letting him feel the safety of her arms, knowing that the fear of abandonment wouldn't vanish overnight, but that she could give him the comfort of knowing he wasn't alone. Not now. Not ever.
And for the first time in a long time, Tony felt like he could truly believe it.
