It was a bright, sunny afternoon, and Steve Rogers had decided to take Bucky on a little shopping trip. It had been a long time since they'd gotten out of the house together, and Bucky had been especially clingy in his little headspace lately. Steve figured a trip to the grocery store would be a fun distraction for him—and maybe they'd pick up a few treats along the way.
As they strolled through the supermarket, Bucky was in full little mode, holding Steve's hand tightly while bouncing slightly on his feet. He had his favorite blue hoodie on, the one with tiny stars all over it, and his face was lit up with excitement as they moved down the aisles. Steve couldn't help but smile. Bucky's enthusiasm was contagious.
"Whatcha wanna get, Buck?" Steve asked as they passed by the snack aisle.
Bucky's eyes darted around, but then he gave a small, thoughtful frown. "Mmmm... plums, Stevie."
Steve chuckled. It was no surprise. Bucky had been obsessed with plums for as long as he could remember. Every time they went shopping, plums were the first thing on his list.
"We'll definitely get some plums, pal," Steve said, ruffling Bucky's hair. "Let's just grab a few other things first, okay?"
Bucky nodded, though his mind was clearly already on the plums. He walked beside Steve, holding onto the cart as they made their way through the store. Steve picked up some essentials—bread, milk, eggs—but every now and then, he'd catch Bucky glancing over at the fruit section, his eyes filled with longing.
Finally, after a few more aisles, Steve steered the cart toward the produce section. The moment Bucky saw the piles of plums, his face lit up like Christmas morning.
"Stevie! Stevie! Plums!" Bucky exclaimed, tugging on Steve's hand as he bounced in place.
Steve couldn't help but grin. "Alright, alright, let's get some plums." He grabbed a plastic bag and handed it to Bucky, who immediately rushed over to the display.
Bucky carefully selected the plumpest, juiciest plums he could find, examining each one before placing it gently in the bag. His focus was intense, like this was the most important task in the world. Steve watched with amusement, leaning on the cart as Bucky meticulously filled the bag.
"Is five enough?" Steve asked after a minute.
Bucky shook his head vigorously. "No, Stevie, more!"
Steve laughed softly. "Okay, okay. How about ten?"
Bucky beamed, nodding enthusiastically as he added more plums to the bag. Once he was satisfied, he handed the heavy bag to Steve with a proud smile.
"All done, Stevie. Lotsa plums."
Steve took the bag and placed it in the cart. "Good job, pal. We'll make sure to get you plenty of plums."
Bucky stuck close to Steve for the rest of the trip, clutching his hand tightly as they finished shopping. Every so often, he'd glance over at the cart, making sure his precious plums were still there. It was the sweetest thing, and Steve couldn't help but feel a swell of affection for him.
After they'd checked out and were walking back to the car, Bucky tugged on Steve's sleeve. "Stevie? Can I have one now?"
Steve chuckled, digging through the grocery bags and handing Bucky a plum. "Here you go, Buck."
