It had been one of those days—a day where Bucky was overwhelmed, slipping so far into headspace that the only language he could manage was Russian. It wasn't unusual for him to regress into his native tongue, but it made communicating with the rest of the team tricky.
That's where Natasha and Wanda came in. They were the only ones who could easily understand Bucky when he was this little, and today, the entire team had rallied around him, determined to help him feel safe and loved.
Bucky sat cross-legged on the living room floor, clutching his worn-out stuffed wolf to his chest. His soft voice, speaking in rapid Russian, spilled out as he looked around the room, talking mostly to himself.
"Что он сказал?" Sam whispered to Natasha, eyeing Bucky as he continued babbling quietly to his wolf.
Natasha, sitting on the couch beside Wanda, gave a small smile. "He's telling the wolf that Birdy looks funny."
Sam snorted. "Well, he's not wrong."
Bucky's head popped up at the sound of Sam's voice, and he grinned. "Птичка!" he called out, holding his arms out to Sam.
"Yup, that's me—Birdy," Sam chuckled, stepping over to crouch next to Bucky. He ruffled Bucky's hair, making the little one giggle.
"Что он сказал на этот раз?" Steve asked from where he was sitting, leaning against the arm of the couch.
Natasha grinned. "He wants Birdy to fly around the room."
"Great," Sam groaned, "I've turned into a jungle gym and an airplane."
Meanwhile, Tony wandered in with a juice box, holding it out to Bucky with a grin. "Juice for the tiny soldier!"
Bucky's eyes lit up. "Метал человек!" he exclaimed, reaching eagerly for the juice.
Wanda leaned in toward Nat, smiling fondly. "He called Tony 'Metal Man' again."
Tony preened. "I love when he does that."
Bucky started drinking his juice, legs kicking happily, while Clint, lounging on the floor nearby, nudged Natasha. "Can you ask him what he thinks about CC's hair today?"
Natasha rolled her eyes but indulged him. "Бак, как тебе волосы ЦЦ?"
Bucky looked at Clint with a mischievous glint in his eyes and babbled something excitedly in Russian.
Wanda covered her mouth, stifling a giggle, and Nat translated with a smirk. "He said CC's hair looks like a bird's nest."
Everyone burst out laughing, and Clint groaned dramatically, though he was clearly amused.
Steve shifted closer to Bucky, pressing a kiss to his hair. "Ты в порядке, солнышко?" he asked softly, in the best Russian he could manage: "Are you okay, sunshine?"
Bucky's grin widened, and he leaned against Steve's side, muttering contentedly, "Да, Дада."
Natasha translated with a smile, but this time, Steve didn't need her help—he knew exactly what that word meant.
