"the gods may throw the dice, their minds as cold as ice"

That same day I was officially declared healthy, which raised another question: what next?

I couldn't leave the realm since the Bifrost had been destroyed. And even if I did, I had to admit that I would rather stay here, at least for a while. But would Odin allow it? Loki had said that after I finished his assignment I could do whatever I wanted, but Loki was no longer king. Due to a lack of better options, I set out to find Thor.

I found him in the dining hall, where he seemed to be having a good time with the Warriors Three and Lady Sif. The five of them actually seemed to be good friends and had been for a long time. You could sense a certain familiarity between them, it was in the way they threw grapes into each other's mouths or laughed together at jokes that only they understood.

My gaze traveled further through the room and met that of a servant with amethyst hair and piercing green eyes. I smiled at her; she smiled back. Her look brought me back to reality and reminded me of what I was meant to be doing right now.

I sat down with the prince and his friends, who looked at me with more or less delight. From Thor, who was beaming, to the other three, who looked quite neutral, to Sif, who obviously couldn't stand me.

"Lady Dajana, it's great to see that you're well again." To say that I was well was quite an exaggeration. I felt miserable. And Thor obviously felt the same. His lips were smiling, but in his eyes, I could see the memories of the fight that haunted the both of us. I also realized that no matter what I said, he wouldn't admit his pain. Why should he? Although we had something in common through his powers, we were still practically strangers.

"I think so too. Thank you for the good treatment. But I'm here on business." He looked at me expectantly and I glanced briefly at the others. He didn't seem to have a problem with them being able to hear everything that followed, so I assumed that he had no secrets from them. "It's about my stay in Asgard... basically about the rest of my life. You know, with the bridge being destroyed."

Thor nodded in understanding. "I'll talk to my father. I'm sure he can be persuaded to let the savior of Asgard stay for a while," he said with a friendly smile.

Dwelling here was definitely a better idea than returning. On Earth, S.H.I.E.L.D. was waiting for me with a thousand questions and too many memories of my past. Here I had a chance for a fresh start and opportunities to really change something.

"It would be an honor if you would accept me here as a guest." "The honor would be entirely ours. Let's go to my father to clarify the details." For a split second, I paused and considered whether I really wanted to meet Odin.

He had been cold-hearted towards Loki and had banished his other son for a reckless mistake.

I had dealt with many wannabe-kings and genuine rulers and knew how to deal with them, but this was a whole new level. Odin was not just some king of one country, he was the Allfather. You shouldn't mess with someone like that. Unfortunately, I had no idea how difficult it would turn out to be.

"Wonderful, I'm already looking forward to finally meeting the great Odin." It was already taking some effort for me to say these words. And it was going to get worse. He apologized to his friends - even after I assured him that it could wait until he found time - and led me into the throne room, where Odin was talking to Heimdall and some advisors about rebuilding the Bifrost.

Thor cleared his throat, drawing everyone's attention. "Father, a word," he requested, and the old man nodded before sending the others away with a single wave of his hand.

I was grateful that Thor did the talking, especially when Odin started to speak...

"She will have to keep your powers. Removing it would destroy her mortal soul." I would have been surprised that he considered my life so important if only he hadn't... "It would be a shame to give up such a powerful ally." To him, I was a weapon. A means to an end. He had no problem destroying 'my mortal soul'; he just wanted me to know what could happen to me if I didn't submit to him. "The extent of your abilities should not be diminished by sharing it."

I bit my cheek hard, suddenly overthinking my plans. Maybe Earth wasn't as bad as I thought. There were beautiful sunsets and good music and sometimes nice people and cute cats.

"Does that mean she can stay here?" Thor asked, apparently ignorant of what his father was suggesting between the lines. "You will start training together tomorrow. In a week I will see what progress you have made and that is how I will determine what happens to her."

Thor nodded happily and put a hand on my shoulder in satisfaction. I couldn't bring myself to thank him, so I just lowered my head and left the hall with quick steps.

A/N: don't you just love Odin. He really is just the best parent.
