"'Cause I love people I don't like"

I couldn't think clearly again until I had put a few doors between me and the cell. Exhausted, I leaned against the cool steel wall and closed my eyes.

What had I learned?

One: Loki had a plan that he was certain we couldn't thwart.
Two: Being here was part of that plan, as I had guessed.
Three: Either he had feelings for me or at least he wanted me to believe that he did.
Four: He had weakened over the years. It had been almost easy to convince him that I wanted to get in. Maybe he knew what I was up to. Maybe he had planted spies himself. Or maybe I had become paranoid.

I was torn back to reality when a violent jolt went through the entire transportation and the corridor filled with red lights and the shrill howl of the alarms.

Stumbling, I made my way to the laboratory that served as a meeting room for our small group but was interrupted when Jill met me halfway. "Thank Odin, you're here. I thought Loki had done Hel knows what to you." Well, it wasn't too far from the truth. "What happened, why did the alarm go off?"

"Everyone was arguing and I'm pretty sure there's something going on between the captain and that other guy. The short, smart one with the hair grabbed the scepter and it probably would have escalated if the machine hadn't started blinking. I think it found something. But before we could do anything, there was an explosion. I don't know where the others are, but the one with the eye patch said something about a turbine failure."

I nodded in understanding. "Was it an attack?" I asked. Stupidly, I hadn't taken a weapon with me because I didn't want to give Loki anything to overwhelm me with, since he was already a big enough threat and shouldn't be underestimated. "I think so?" She sounded so unsure that I decided to ignore it for now.

I noticed the movement just in time to pull Jill to the ground with me before the bullet hit the wall a few meters away, at the height where her head had been only milliseconds earlier.

I was immediately back on my feet, ready to strike. With few hits, the agent was down. But right as he hit the ground, the gun in his hand went off, burying a bullet in my left shoulder. Instinctively, I staggered back, therefore giving him an opportunity to get up again.

But those few seconds had been enough for Jill to get back up herself, and run the attacker through with her sword. The body dropped to the ground, revealing Jill covered in his blood.

For a moment, I completely forgot about the pain and had to actively remember how to breathe. And- for fucks sake, was I blushing? "Thanks," I managed, my voice a little cracked. Luckily, Jill was still Jill and let it slide without comment, instead helping me back to my feet.

"Are you alright?" she asked worriedly, examining my wound with an expert eye. "It needs to be treated. It's not fatal yet, but it could easily get infected." I raised my uninjured arm and stopped her from helping me.

"Listen to me, I think I got Loki to trust me. But I need to leave with him now, otherwise this will all have been for nothing. You can't help me either, otherwise, it won't be as believable. The more you hate me, the better, so you should hit me somewhere, I need more battle wounds." She looked at me as if I'd lost my mind. "You were shot." "Oh, I can handle it. Now hit me. Pretend I'm Loki. Or Thor." "No, I mean you were shot. Don't you think that's enough of an injury?"

I looked at my shoulder. My thoughts sounded like a fuzzy radio frequency. I decided to just listen to Jill. So far, that hadn't gotten me killed. "Fine then. I still have to go before Loki leaves." She sighed quietly. "Don't do anything unnecessarily dangerous." "You know me." "You see why I said that then..." I winked at her with a grin before disappearing around a corner in the direction leading toward the landing pad. If Loki wanted to get out of here and didn't intend to take over the entire ship, which was now swaying dangerously, he would need a means of transport.

I stumbled a few times on the way out, but always kept myself upright. When the door to the outside opened, I was greeted by a strong breeze. The group was obviously about to take off when Loki saw me and shouted orders against the wind. Two of them hurried towards me. As soon as they reached me I felt a brief pain in my neck before everything turned black

~

When I woke up I found myself on a bed of blankets in the flying Quinnjet

My arm had been uncovered and the wound had somehow mostly healed.

Loki sat next to me and looked at me with a mix of determination, anger and madness. "Who did this?" he asked, his voice dryer than I remembered. "It's good to see you again as well. I'm fine, thank you for asking," I replied sarcastically. I needed as much time as possible to think of something to say that would be believable and at the same time increase my sympathy. "I healed you myself after the bullet was out, I know how you feel. What I don't know is who is responsible for me almost losing my best fighter." He straightened the blanket and handed me a glass of water, which I gladly accepted. He seemed almost human with all those emotions in his voice.

"One of these agents. How did you get them to work with you in the first place?" I asked, looking at those sitting on the plane with us. "Mind control," he explained briefly, leaning forward a little. "What happened?"

I sighed quietly and sat up carefully. "He wanted to shoot Jill, but the little backstabber ducked and made me a target. The guy is dead now." I tried to say the last thing as coolly as possible, which wasn't easy. He had been a person. He'd had friends. I pushed the thoughts away, in the same corner as the others.

"Don't worry, I can still fight." I raised and lowered my arm to prove my point. The pain was bearable. Loki seemed to hesitate; considering what I could, and should handle. "Are you sure?" I nodded.
