JJ had put in his two weeks at the his old job and It was finally his first day working for Kiara's dad at The Wreck. He drove his bike up there and stayed in the parking lot for a moment just staring at the building. He was excited but also nervous. He knew he couldn't mess this up. He wanted her dad to respect him, and prove that he could handle it.
"JJ!" Mike shouted from the front counter. JJ smiled as he shut the door behind his softly. It was 9:00 A.M. two hours before the restaurant opened. Mike, kie, and her mom were standing around the front just talking. Probably waiting for JJ to get there.
"Hey guys." he said as he walked up to the counter, wrapping his arm around kies waist in a hug as they shared a quick peck.
"You ready work today, JJ?" her dad teased
"Born ready." he smiled
"That's what I like to hear." Mike clapped his hands together. "First things first I'm gonna teach you how to open."
"Well, my shift doesn't start till 4 so.. Im gonna go..not, be here." Kie joked and they all laughed. "don't be too hard on him dad."
"Yeah no promises ever." Mike joked.
"Good luck." kie smiled excitedly, squeezing his hand before leaving.
"Good luck, JJ" Anna smiled. "I'll be back at lunch rush."
Mike took JJ into the back where he showed him how to set up for the lunch shift. Mike showed him where everything was and how to turn everything on. He showed him how to prep food and while it may have looked like this was JJs first time actually cutting a vegetable with anything other than a pocket knife, he eventually got the hang of it. He briefly went over how to cook most of there popular dishes but told him they would get into that more once the restaurant opened. It was a Monday so business should be slower than usual, perfect for teaching.
After learning the basics, Other employees showed up and the doors opened for customers.
"Now you're gonna be back here with me for a while before I let you anywhere near the customers." Mike informed him and JJ laughed. "But eventually you will be trained on serving."
"Yeah, Yeah, I actually used to serve at a hotel on weekends." JJ said. "I just quit cuz kooks get on my nerves."
"yeah well, you will run into kooks here too. I'ma teach you how to handle it though don't worry." he said.
"Now I want you to meet the guys." MIke said, taking JJ into the back by the dumpster. they were all smoking and talking outside. they were a little sketchy looking but didn't seem like they'd bite. "Alright guys, This is JJ. He's new here and were gonna be training him today. That's Roni, Tank, and Jim."
"Now listen this is no other employee. He is my Pupil. He's training his way up and I take full responsibility for him. Don't give him cigarettes, don't let him hit your little do-hickys, and Don't sell him shit. got it?" Mike said and everyone laughed, including JJ
"Doo-hickys?" JJ mumbled
"Wait a sec, boss" one of the older guys said. "ain't this Kiaras little boyfriend?"
The moment of realization hit all the guys and they began laughing.
"Oh we've heard allllll about you." Jim teased.
"That being said." Mike continued "Do your thing, don't make it easy on him. Train him good."
He pat JJ on the back and left him outside with the guys who were still laughing.
"Aw man." one of the guys said, playfully putting his arm around JJ. "This is gonna be fun."
"So boss showed you how things work around here this morning." Tank said. "Now were gonna show you how things REALLY work around here."
JJ nervously laughed. He already felt like he needed to win them over. there's no telling what Mike probably said about him in the beginning. And the whole "This is no other employee" bull shit mike pulled. He felt as though he really needed to prove himself to these guys.
At first the guys just taught him how to start the soups and gumbos up, how to plate the food, and how the ticket system worked. After all the bases were touched, the doors opened.
Mike was back there again and wanted JJ just to shadow him for the first hour and keep up with small tasks. Mike went into detail as he made almost every dish on the menu and had jj watch and listen. Then things started to pick up for the lunch rush and that's when JJ got into the swing of things and quickly got the hang of most of it. For his first day he was doing pretty good.
Once lunch rush was over they started getting ready for shift change. They had certain things they had to do like change out the pots and pans, sweep the line, clean the grills and stove tops. It was important to mike that everything stayed clean and fresh.
"alright JJ, your a minor." Mike said once they were all done. "you gotta go on break."
"Break?" JJ asked. "Why?"
"Its the law." Mike chuckled.
"Hey, enjoy mandatory breaks while they last." Roni said from the back. "get you some food if you want."
"50% employee discount." mike added.
JJ looked down at his phone for the first time all day and saw that kie texted him to meet up.
"Im okay thanks." he smiled. "I'll be back in 30?"
"Or an hour, its up to you." Mike smiled
He nodded and left to go meet with kie.
