SweetDumplingssChapter 27: Final Cries and Goodbyes
NevaehFive Years Ago
New York"Bitch!" a familiar voice chirped in my ears. I turned my head over to see dark brown long waves and olive skin. She wore a black blouse with a dark brown skirt. Her eyes glowed brightly, like they were projecting their own rays of light.
Samantha Smith. Dimples appeared as she gave a cheeky smile.
"What's up, Sammy?" I asked, going over one of the choreographies that was taught in class today. I stayed after just to practice while the moves were still fresh in mine. We were surrounded by mirrors on walls, standing on the hard-wooden floor. She tried to imitate a ballerina doing a pirouette but stubbled on her own two feet. Luckily, she was able to stabilize her balance.
"Ready for tonight?" she asked.
"Yes, but for some reason, something is telling me we shouldn't go. We'd probably be better off watching a romcom or something."
"No, come on, you promised. You promised you live a bit of New York life. I know it is different from your suburban Connecticut lifestyle but remember, this is to try new things. That's why you are no longer in Connecticut." Connecticut was not all suburbs. There was city life in some cities but I would admit that it was nothing compared to New York.
I sighed. Half of me thought Samantha had validity in what she was saying and the other half did not want to agree with her. But I guess the people-pleaser side of me was giving in more. "Okay, fine."
She squealed and wrapped her arms around my neck. Perhaps a little too hard. "Sam, relax!"
"Who knows, we might hit it off with two great guys and have the best sex of our lives. I can make the arrangements."
I sucked in my breath very noticeably.
"I'm joking," she corrected, cracking a smirk at my startled expression. My shoulders dropped slightly. "But," she continued, "I think it would be great if you just live a little."
"Sammy, I am living."
"Living? You? Yeah, right! What you do for fun is watching the Vampire Diaries every weekend or reading a book."
"What's wrong with that?" Sometimes a book or show can entertain you better than any real man could.
"Nothing is wrong with that, but girl! You can be a little more reckless and actually go to a party or a club, hey, even a bar." This was a very Sammy-coded answer.
"But we are underage. We are not twenty-one."
"That hasn't stopped me." Again, another Sammy-coded answer.
I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "Sammy, you're crazy."
"I am not. I am nineteen, almost twenty, and you are only this young once. So I am going to enjoy the fuck out it, so I don't end up like like those 30 something year olds or forty years olds who have mid-life crisis." She lifted her hands like she wouldn't touch "having a midlife crisis" even if it was right in front of her.
"I already said fine. Don't make me change my mind."
"I am sure Damon Salvatore would want you to be reckless too," she joked but hearing his name used for a fictional character made my heart ache.
