Chapter 32: A Bit of Deja-Vu
Damon

I was in my childhood home which brought back memories including unwanted ones. The way my father tried to mold me in his image and how miserable I was. Most of my great memories were with Victoria and my mother. I could never stay fully in those positive memories because the ugliest ones seem to always jump out.

I was standing across from my father who was seated in his chair at the dining table, at the end. I couldn't stand being in the same building as him, let alone being several feet. But I had to ask him. I need to know the truth.

"What business do you have with the Caliento family?" I asked.

It was time for my father to come clean with all he knew. Cade has been on my mind for months and to think my parents are the cause of all of this made me run low on patience for answers.

My father held his drink firmly before tossing it to the back of throat. "I never wanted you involved in this," he clarified. He clenched his jaw and his shoulders looked tense.

"That doesn't answer my question," I spoke impatiently.

My father sighed and settled the glass onto the brown table. "The Caliento family... Before you were born, your mother worked for the Caliento family back in Italy. The Caliento family were known for their business, their fortune, and their power. You could almost say that the Caliento owned Italy, especially in San Gimignano. You couldn't say anything bad about them or cheat them in any way or you would have to pay the price," he uttered calmly and meticulously. He lifted his drink and took another sip before placing it back down on the table. Harsh lines formed on his forehead as he tried to remember.

He continued, "Your mom worked for them as a maid at first. She worked closely with the Caliento's heir, Roman Caliento. Roman was fond of your mother and one could say she was his favorite. Your mom liked him too. And you can already guess what happened next. According to your mom, Roman was supposed to marry this Russian Mafia princess of some sort, because you know, for business."

I was digesting everything my father was saying. My mother was somehow involved with the mafia. If I was honest with myself, and knowing who my mother was, I didn't believe any of the shit my father was saying. But I still tuned in.

"She and Roman had a secret relationship despite the fact he was betrothed to another. And your mother became pregnant," he said then took the last sip of his drink. It was like he couldn't tell me while being completely sober.

Pregnant? Suddenly, I felt dryness in my throat.

My father continued, "She was pregnant but she couldn't be. They would have killed her. Roman didn't want your mother to leave, especially since she was carrying his child. So, they were going to leave together. But the girl that was supposed to marry Roman found out. I don't really know how but she did and made a deal with your mother that your mother could not resist. Your mother will have the chance to start over with one of their family's most trusted doctor with protection."

I was able to assume that it was my father that was the trusted doctor and the protection was Lucien.
"Your mother took the chance, changed her identity and came all the way here with me. But Roman couldn't handle the loss of your mother, she was his one true love and it completely destroyed him, almost killed him. And the Caliento family didn't take light of this betrayal," my father hung his head low with a shadow of shame spreading across his face. "So I am sure they are talking it out on you, Damon. Even though you are Roman's son."
