Chapter 34: [Best Title Goes Here]
Nevaeh
The sound of a deadly boom travelled in the air so loudly, I couldn't tell if I was shaking due to the intensity of the sound or fear. Most likely both. Fear travelled to my throat and choked me so strongly, I felt like I was dying.
I was so scared to open my eyes and see him-- solèy mwen -- lifeless in front of my eyes. But I managed to peek a bit at the ground. I didn't realize how quickly I moved in a matter of seconds, because I was close enough to see red blood staining the ground.
A soft gasp escaped my lips, and I immediately covered them with my hands as if not making a sound would somehow make this feel like a nightmare I could wake up from. I felt my skin turn cold.
No. This was not how our story was supposed to end.
I couldn't bring myself to look up to see Cade smiling over Damon's body. The pain in my heart was so unbearable. No words could describe how my heart was being ripped to shreds. I felt something slide down against my right cheek. That feeling of pure sadness. And I knew this was real.
I heard my face as I sobbed. My face and chest hurt so much but I couldn't stop. My vision was blurred by my tears. "No, Damon," I whispered weakly.
I felt a strong presence in front of me as they put their hands on my shoulders, and I closed my eyes again. "Get away from me," I said.
"Amore--" I held my breath. The voice I thought I would never hear again. I looked up and my vision was beginning to clear up. The first thing I noticed was my favorite set of eyes that always left a warm feeling in my heart.
I felt tears form in my eyes once more as I wrapped my arms around Damon's waist. Relief settled my nerves as I took in Damon's scent. My eyes glanced over at the trail of blood which led to Cade's lifeless body on the ground. "How did you..."
Damon and I pulled away from each other. "I said I wasn't alone.
I furrowed my brows. Then, I heard the sound of footsteps getting closer. I followed the direction of the sound and saw Lucien walking closer to us.
I watched as Damon stood by the door, his knuckles white, his jaw clenched with barely-contained tension. The building was eerily quiet after Cade's confrontation, and for a moment, it felt like the air itself had frozen. Lucien's presence should have been comforting, but instead, it was like a shadow loomed over the whole place.
Lucien wasn't the kind of guy you could trust with your deepest secrets. I didn't know him that long but he seemed like he joked around too much, always had a smirk on his face that made it impossible to know what was really going on behind his eyes. He caught Damon's look, the one that said there were still so many questions, and gave him a knowing grin.
"Well, well," Lucien chuckled, leaning against the wall casually. "Finally figured out the truth, huh?"
Damon narrowed his eyes at Lucien, clearly frustrated, but I could see the flicker of realization in his gaze. "You knew," Damon muttered. "You knew about Christian."
