Chapter 33: "Secrets Unveiled"

Nevaeh

It had been a couple of hours since I was conscious and I was skeptical. Cade had not done anything aside from hitting me in the head. Was he all bark but no bite? I didn't want to test him and find out what he was truly about.

He had not mentioned a word about Sammy since the men came in with Daisy. Daisy, however, was unconscious. From time to time, I watch her chest rise and fall just to keep myself sane. There were about six men in front of me, including Cade.

As time passed, the room's scent became more poignant. The air thick with a stifling silence that only deepened my sense of isolation. Not even Daisy's presence could calm my nerves. I could hear my heartbeat pounding in my ears as I glanced at Cade, the man who had taken me and had haunted my thoughts every second since five years ago.

I watched him tap on his phone several times and stepped out to take a call. The rest of the men stood like statues. They reminded me of dogs who respect their owner, do and act as they are told. And it gave me the sense they were loyal and if they were to act out of line, there would be consequences. Cade's cold green eyes gleamed in the dim light. His calculating gaze that made my skin crawl. But there was something more—something about the way his lips twitched as if there was a secret he couldn't wait to share. The more I observed him, the more I felt unsafe.

A groan told my attention, causing me to head to follow its direction. Daisy was finally waking up. Her eyes were fluttering slowly and her head was turning. Her dark curls fell over face and she was tossing and turning to get some away from her eyes. She began to mumble words in Italian as her eyes scanned around the room. She straightened her body as she took the sight of the building in.

Her eyes fell onto the men in front of us and then to me. Then her eyes widened. "Nevaeh? Why are you here?"

"Still trying to figure that out," I told her. "What about you?"

Her skin looked a bit paler, lips dried, and horror in her eyes. "It's....it's a long story," she began. Her lips parted but the sound was cut off from another voice I grew to be familiar with.

"I am sure you have many questions, Princess?"

"Stop calling me that, bastard."

"Okay, Nevaeh," he enunciated my name so clearly, it was just as annoying. "Let me answer your question about Samantha. I know you are dying to know."

My heart skipped a beat as I recalled what happened not too long ago. It was a picture of a girl. The face was partially obscured by strands of messy brown hair, but the girl's eyes—those eyes—haunted me. And the way Cade stared at it, as if the photo meant something to him, and the way he then looked at me with so much hatred made my stomach churn.

But he was right. Dying to know was an understatement. Why does he know Sammy? She never mentioned Cade. But then again, we are all entitled to some secrets. I watched as Cade crouched down to my level which irritated me more. It was like I was his little mouse and he was a snake. Taunting me before he finally killed me. I looked into his green eyes that had no warmth to them.

I didn't want him to think I was scared of him. I was trying my best to hide it. "You've been quiet since Daisy came in," I said, my voice trembling but defiant. "Usually, you're all about the taunts."
