Mishthi's pov
So, today is the last day in this jail khana (prison). I am not going to come here again. I am literally bored of lying on the bed.
"Veer, please take me out of this jail khana soon," I said.
"Ohh, Liebe, just wait a minute, baccha. Let me finish these forms, then we will go," he replied. I nodded.
During this entire time, he never left my side. I think he has also accepted Mom because they were talking, and I am happy for them. But somewhere in my heart, I have questions.
"Will he accept our child if she is a daughter?" I felt insecure because I had seen Pari and Suman being pushed aside by society.
Everyone came to visit me, except chachi, and then I learned that Veer had warned her to stay away from me. But what’s the use? In the end, we’ll all be together in the same house under one roof.
I was lost in thought when I placed my hand on my stomach and said, "Baby, we are going back home."
I know it’s my first trimester, so there won’t be any movement from the baby yet. I just wanted to talk to my baby. As I looked over, I saw Veer approaching. He took my hand and said,
“Liebe, baccha, from now on, you have to be more careful because two hearts are beating inside you. Don’t go anywhere alone.”
“I’m not a kid,” I replied.
“You are a kid, my baccha,” he teased, then kissed my forehead and said, “Here, go and wear this, only if you’re comfortable.”
I took it from him and went to the bathroom, where I found a beautiful dress inside the box, along with bangles, earrings, and jutti. I smiled, put everything on, let my hair down, and walked out. Veer stood there with his mouth open, staring at me.
“Beautiful,” he said. I blushed, and then he pulled out a box and applied sindoor to my parting before kissing my forehead again.
"We are going somewhere."
"Yes, to our home. Let's go now," he said, taking me in his arms.
"Put me down, Veer. I'm okay now. Look, everyone is staring at us."
"Let them. I'm carrying my wife," he said, and I hid my face in his chest. We stepped outside, and he set me down on a seat.
He held my hand and kissed my knuckles. I smiled, but noticed something was off. This wasn't the way to our home.
"Where are we going?"
"This path isn't leading home."
"Wait, Liebe," he said, handing me his phone. I started scrolling through reels. He really treats me like a baby. Soon, we stopped in front of a very big house, beautifully decorated with flowers. I thought he had brought me to someone's house.
Then, he picked me up again. Ugh, it's not that I don't like this, but does he have to do it everywhere? I wrapped my hands around his neck as he knocked on the door. I hid my face in embarrassment because of my husband. The next second, I heard a loud voice and saw Ekansh.
"Welcome home, Bhabhi!"
I smiled and looked around. I saw my mom, dad, bhai, Suman Bhabhi, mother-in-law, Pari, Ekansh, Giya, Nirman jiju, Ganesh, and Yashu (Suman and Arya’s son). I looked at Veer in confusion, and he said, "This is our house now. We're going to stay here." I smiled and nodded. Just then, I saw Ma (Veer's mom) spreading a white cloth like a carpet in front of me, placing a kalash and some alta. She brought a thali and said, "Dip your hand and put a handprint on the wall."
I smiled and was about to dip my hand, but my bangles were getting in the way. I was getting irritated, but Veer gently held my bangles and helped me press my hand on the wall. Then, I kicked the kalash, dipped my feet in alta, and started walking. I remembered my grah pravesh and smiled. As I looked around the hall, I noticed everyone’s photos except his chachi and father.
Veer came over, placed his hand on my shoulder, and gestured for me to sit. As I sat, Bhabhi came with Yashu. I kissed his forehead, and he smiled in his sleep.
Then, I saw Ma and Veer coming from the kitchen. Ma made him sit next to me, took some red chilies, and started rotating them around us. She then called a maid to burn them and said, "May no evil eye befall my children." She dabbed some kohl behind my ear. It was then I noticed that she wasn't wearing a mangalsutra or sindoor. She must have sensed my confusion, as she sat down next to my mom and said, "I divorced him."
My mouth dropped open.
"Because he was nothing but a womanizer. I hated him from the day I married him. He even slept with my own sister, and my sister was happy about it. But by the time she realized, it was too late—she was already pregnant with his child." I saw the hesitation in her eyes. No one knew about this, and everyone stared at her, waiting for her to continue.
"When I found out, I wanted to leave him, but divorce wasn't allowed in our family. So, I had to stay with that monster.
"I began to hate my sister more and more, but months passed, and no one knew about the child growing inside her. Then came her delivery day. She gave birth to a boy, and when I looked at him, all my hate melted away. I became emotional. But the next day, when I went to the hospital, I learned that she had jumped from the terrace. In her last moments, she said something that shattered me."
Ma had tears in her eyes. My mom held her hand, and she continued, "She told me that he had forced himself on her. Just because we belonged to a lower family, he used her, and he was planning to sell her overseas. Her last words were, 'Just take care of my child as if he were yours. Please give him all the love of a mother.'"
Tears rolled down everyone’s faces. I asked, "What about that child? Where is he now? Why doesn't he live with us?"
"That child is me, Liebe," Veer said. I looked at him and saw he was playing with his ring. I was shocked but hugged him as I felt his tears on my clothes.
Ma continued, "I took full responsibility for him. I decided to send him far away from that cruel man, who wanted to kill him. Veer thought I sent him away because I hated him, but no, I loved him. I wanted to keep him safe. He looks more like my sister than that man. The only good thing he ever did for me was give me my children—Ekansh, Suman, and Raghuveer. They are all mine."
Suman and Ekansh hugged her, saying, "We love you, Mumma."
"I love you too, my children." She then came toward us, stood in front of Veer, and held his hand. "I never wanted his shadow to fall on you," she said. Veer hugged her tightly, sobbing.
"I'm sorry, Ma. I'm really sorry," he said, joining his hands in front of her. She kissed his forehead and said, "A mother never hates her child."
"But what about mine?" It was Pari.
"What about my mother? She hates me so much."
"You don't need her. We're all here to give you a mother's and father's love," I said, and she came and hugged me.
Suddenly, my mood swings hit, and I felt like bursting into laughter.
"Please, everyone, stop getting emotional. Everything is fine!" I said, and they all smiled, looking at me.
