Finally it was the big day. GLaDOS would love to think they are perfectly prepared, but... they were spinning. And not the happy kind. It was the stressed kind. They couldn't stop worrying about all the ways it could go wrong. A detriment of being able to calculate so many possible outcomes is that you have to live with the knowledge of all the ways something could go wrong without having the time or resources to actually prevent those eventualities.
Well no point putting it off anymore. Peter just finished his tests. Next up is Elyse. "Good morning Elyse. I hope you haven't forgotten what you promised." Elyse turned around and stood up... very slowly. "Yeah yeah..." GLaDOS gave a virtual blink checking the room number to make sure they weren't watching the wrong camera feed.
"Impressive. I didn't need to force you out of bed today." Despite the deadpan delivery of that, GLaDOS was genuinely surprised. They had already readied a few audio files too. Shame, really. "I take my promises seriously. I might be lazy but I still got standards... Even if they are low."
"Well then, grab yourself something to go and put on your gear." Elyse sluggishly moved towards the coffee machine, turning it on, before going to the closet to put on her gear. All the while, GLaDOS was watching giddily like a parent watching their child take its first steps... just that instead they were the first steps away from laziness for Elyse. 10 minutes later, which was record speed for Elyse, they started Operation Memory.
"So, what's the plan?" Elyse asked, somewhat wary of what GLaDOS had in store for her. "Thought you'd never ask. It's a very easy task. You'll walk to somewhere, get something, bring it to somewhere, and something with the something you brought, bring away the something to somewhere else and walk back to here!" GLaDOS described descriptively. Truly almost too much detail in the instructions.
"Aha... I see... I get it." Elyse said, confidently. "Wait, really?" Elyse looked back, staring with dead eyes "No." GLaDOS was relieved. It was better that Elyse didn't know exactly what she was doing "All you have to do is follow instructions, easy enough, right?"
Elyse sighed. She signed up for it, so she couldn't really back out now "Fine, fine. So what should I do first oh mighty master of relaying information" GLaDOS ignored the comment. They could get back at Elyse later. "First, leave your room and walk left"
Elyse started leaving her room and asked a bit confused "Why left, there is nothing on either side of the hallwa-" she stopped as she turned the corner. There, a never before seen door revealed itself. "You know what? Nevermind. I'm assuming I need to go through the door?" GLaDOS gave a nod, before remembering that Elyse cannot see them, following up with a verbal confirmation.
As Elyse entered the maintenance area she was once more reminded of the scale of aperture laboratories. She slowly walked along the catwalk, looking around the backrooms of the facility stretching out seemingly endlessly, the sounds of machinery usually muted through the soundproofing echoing through the area. The stagnant smell of metal hung in the air and- "-yse? Elyse?! Where on earth are you walking to? You were supposed to turn left a moment ago!"
Elyse snapped out of it. "Sorry, was in thought" they turned around and went left. "You had me scared there for a moment. Can't have a test subject walk around without supervision in here. The scientists would have my head if you found the main generator for the coffee production." GLaDOS sighed in relief. GLaDOS wasn't entirely sure if robots could have heart attacks, but they just got damn close to finding out.
"So were you listening at all?" GLaDOS asked curiously, in response Elyse just shook her head no. "And here I thought you were just listening closely when I was explaining the entire plan to you, turns out you weren't as interested as I thought. Guess you'll have to find out as we go." They, in fact, did not explain anything.
