Avery's summer was spent dividing her time between hanging out with her sister when she's free, listening to the house-elf gossip about the latest Nobel House feuds, and preparing for the upcoming school year. Although she wanted to spend time exploring Diagon Alley to catch up on some reading and shopping, it was difficult to accommodate her whim due to her mother and sister's protective measures. A part of her understood their reasons as the news she regularly heard from them and saw in the Daily Prophet weren't exactly appealing.

Several articles reported on the disappearances and strange deaths of muggles, and other incidents that seemed to stem from the rising presence of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his followers. Even more troubling were the reports of rising tension and violence among wizarding families. Some households had even cut off all contact with each other due to disputes that had turned into feuds. It was hard to ignore the sense of dread that was seeping into the wizarding world, no matter how much people tried to deny it.

Whether the depressing news or a large amount of sleep lost during Avery's fifth year led her to sleep for most of the days is unknown. Her mother, Melissa Greengrass, would come back from work and Avery would be still dreaming in her sleep, causing her to fuss over her daughter's "abnormally long sleep schedule."

"Avery, wake up. It's three in the afternoon already."

Avery jolts awake from her sleep, grabbing for the clock on her bedside table.

"What? It's already three?"

"Yes, it's three in the afternoon. I don't know why you insist on sleeping these hours away. You're missing out on the summer."

Avery rubs her eyes, still disoriented from her sleep. "I don't know, Mum. I just feel so tired all the time."

Melissa sighs, her expression softening slightly, as she moves to sit on the edge of the bed.

"That's exactly my point. You're constantly tired because you're sleeping all day."

Avery shrugs, feeling a mix of guilt and exhaustion. She knew her mother was right, but she couldn't help but feel drained most of the time.

"How was work today?" she asks.

"It was... chaotic, to say the least. Bunch of old pureblood families constantly at each other's throats, bickering over petty grievances. I don't understand how they have so much time and energy to waste on such nonsense."

"Sounds like a nightmare," Avery says, trying to muster up some energy in her voice.

"It can be, but it pays the bills... which reminds me..." Melissa gets up from the bed and walks over to the dresser, picking up a pile of letters lying there.

"These arrived for you earlier today."

She hands the letters to Avery, her eyes flitting over the sender's names. Avery doesn't bother to look down at the names, knowing it's a thousand letters she'll have to write back to her friends that day. Being in a six-people friend group is nice, but sometimes, Avery wishes she could communicate to all of them simultaneously without having to put energy in writing letters to each one.
