"YOU DROPPED ARITHMANCY THIS YEAR???" Avery shouts incredulously as the Emeralds are eating breakfast at the Slytherin table in the great hall before their very first class for their fifth year starts. Since it's still early and the school just reopened after the break, the professors don't seem to care about which table they sit at.

"It's BORING, okay leave me alone about it," Dorcas replies, clearly in a mood.

"But what about me??"

"You'll have Barty. Besides, you can survive on your own"

"He's useless."

"Excuse you? I'll get overall 12 Outstandings in my O.W.Ls by the end of the year," Barty retorts.

"As if."

"I'll bet you anything, what are the stakes?"

Evan chimes in, "Loser does the others chores for the whole sixth year."

"And what else does the winner get? An ego boost?"

"A chocolate frog," Pandora replies absentmindedly.

"I'm in."

The group agrees on the bet, with Regulus and Pandora siding with Barty, and Avery, Evan, and Dorcas against him getting 12 Outstandings. It wasn't like Avery thought he was no smart to get them, but he's never given a care about academics his whole life. Just as she's about to check their timetables, a loud thud fills the Great Hall.

Turning to look at the source, they're faced with the sight of Sirius Black sprawled on the floor on the other side of the hall, whining as he holds his leg. Presumably, he had tripped over the bench near the entrance, who Marlene McKinnon nonchalantly kicks as she enters the Great Hall. None of their little friend group, except James Potter, who's dragging him, seems to care about this as Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew just go on to take their respective seats.

Avery turns her head around and habitually takes a glance at Regulus, who's biting onto his toast, showing no emotion on his face as if he neither heard nor saw the scene.

Pandora, still seemingly lost in her own world, suddenly perks up. "What is our first class again?"

"Defense Against the Dark Arts," Regulus says, finally speaking up. "Hope the new professor is decent."

Tired after a full day of classes and prefect duties, Avery returns to the Ravenclaw common room.

"What can travel around the world while staying in a corner?" the door knocker riddles.

"A stamp," Avery answers, and the door opens. Just as she's about to enter, a voice calls out behind her.

"Avery, wait up!"

She turns around to find Lily Evans rushing towards her with a letter in her hand. It's safe to say that she and Lily are closer than one would expect them to be, considering they're in different years and different houses. However, the friendship started when they bonded over their shared interest in books last year.
