Greengrass.
The surname holds itself in prestige, standard, and elegance in the pureblood community. The question is, would it remain the same to the eyes of people even after the internal struggles of the family are revealed?
Avery Greengrass would rather not. She lacked what others would consider a proper childhood; sure, there were days at peace and calmness. But most of the time, the endless cycle of arguments between her parents were the main topic of every day. Her father was a severe alcoholic, unemployed and perpetually angry. Her mother, despite being a remarkable woman, bore the brunt of his abuse, both physical and mental. And the worst of all, she would be the scapegoat of her sister, Violet Greengrass, when it comes to these issues for unfair reasons.
Even though Avery was her in-house best friend, Avery could not consider Violet as her best friend no matter how hard she tried; it was not like they did not love each other. After all, her older sister was a nice person to her and everyone else. She just did not like confiding things to any member of the family. Avery never felt that their house was her home.
Home was her beloved Dorcas Meadowes, Evan Rosier, Pandora Lestrange, Barty Crouch Jr., and Regulus Black. If anything, she will always return to them: the emeralds.
It was in 3rd year when Pandora came up with this name for their friend group, on a random day when they all hung out for the first time at Hogsmeade. She decided it would suit their friend group when she saw the emerald crystals at a vintage store they visited. Considering her love for crystals and gemstones, it didn't surprise all of them and they decided to go along with the name.
Although Dorcas is Avery's closest one out of the group, she's always had a soft spot for Pandora and Barty, maybe because of the fact that they're Ravenclaws too. Barty will act reckless and stupid most of the time, but she knows that there's much more to him than his outward image. There's a reason that the bastard was sorted in Ravenclaw. As for Evan and Regulus, they're basically inseparable.
It all started in the Hogwarts express in first year when Avery was sitting alone at a compartment since she's always the earliest one no matter what occasion it is. The compartment door was opened with a loud thud, startling her slightly when she was peering out of the window. Turning back to look at the source, she saw a girl with an annoyed expression on her face, apparently struggling with how old the door is. When she notices Avery staring at her, a polite smile instantly brightens up her face, matching with her beautiful dark curls.
"Hey, can I sit with you?"
Avery nods with a small smile as the girl enters the compartment and sits down opposite of her, "Yes, sure."
"I'm Dorcas Meadowes. Nice to meet you," she says confidently, holding out her hand.
Avery cannot help but feel extremely captivated by something about her — which was her aura.
They spent time introducing and talking to each other for more than 10 minutes before a blonde boy peeked through the compartment door.
"Hi, are the seats available?" he says with a sheepish look on his face.
As Avery and Dorcas answered, he motions behind him before entering the compartment with another boy, who had significant features. By significant, he had dark eyebrows, green eyes, and soft curls, which were rather a unique combination. Dorcas introduces herself to both of them, followed by Avery.
"I'm Evan. Evan Rosier."
"Regulus Black."
The compartment was majorly filled with Dorcas and Evan talking to each other after that, as Avery and Regulus mostly silent. The compartment's dynamic shifted again when another boy barged in, sitting beside Evan without a word of introduction. He just sits down beside Evan and excuses himself.
Avery later learned that his name was Barty Crouch Jr., named after his father, which is rather unfortunate and lacks originality she thought. Just as she thought their group was complete, a blonde girl knocks on the door, making Barty open the door as he was the closest to it.
"Hello everyone, is it okay if I sit here? All the other compartments are full," she says with a small, polite smile on her face. Her voice is extremely gentle to the point that it instantly turns everyone's attention to her.
Evan and Avery together replied, "Of course" at the same time, causing the girl's expression to brighten and sit beside Avery after closing the door. This time, she's the first one who does the introduction, maybe because she thought the girl radiated safe vibes.
"I'm Avery Greengrass. Nice to meet you."
"I'm Pandora Lestrange."
Little did they know they would become each other's home along the Hogwarts journey.
