[H]e was making it harder for you, as usual. That's exactly why you needed space—breathing room from him. After the little stop at the boba shop, you both walked in silence until you reached the curb. Except there was something off.
Two cars, not just one, waited by the curb. Ijichi and Nitta stood beside them, their faces neutral but tense. You could almost feel the anxiety radiating off Ijichi, and you wondered if it was because of Gojo or something else entirely.
Ijichi approached first, eyes flickering nervously between you and Gojo. He was carrying himself as if walking on eggshells—posture stiff, movements overly cautious. "Y/N-san, these are for you." He handed over a set of keys, the metallic clink barely audible over the tension.
You glanced at the keys, slowly piecing it together. Of course. Personal assistants often drove sorcerers to their missions. It wasn't strange... until it involved Gojo that is. He was never one to make anything easy.
You reached for the keys, fingers barely brushing the metal before a sudden tug at your collar made you freeze. It wasn't rough, but firm enough to stop you in your tracks. You drew in a sharp breath as Gojo's hand casually gripped your collar, the brush of his fingers against your skin light, yet deliberate.
"Not necessary." His voice sliced through the moment, smooth and deceptively casual, but there was an underlying tone that hinted at something more. You could feel the possessiveness threaded in his words even though he wasn't looking at you. His gaze was squarely on Ijichi, who stood frozen, eyes wide like he'd been caught in the headlights of some immense curse.
Gojo's grip was light, almost absent-minded, but there was no mistaking the claim behind it. His fingers lingered at the base of your neck for a second too long before he let go, but the sensation stayed with you, your pulse quickening.
Ijichi froze, bewildered, eyes darting nervously. "Gojo-san...?"
A grin broke across Gojo's face—brilliant, disarming, and a little too sharp. "I'll take her myself," he declared, still smiling, his hands slipping casually into his pockets. "I'm not trusting anyone else to drive me around. Besides..." He shot Ijichi a look that made the man shrink back. "You're lucky I don't need you today."
Ijichi bowed quickly, his relief palpable. "Of course, Gojo-san," he muttered, retreating faster than you thought possible.
You barely had time to register what had just happened when Gojo turned his attention back to you, his face glowing with a playful satisfaction. "Don't mention it—I live to serve," he said, voice dripping with mock formality, like he'd just done you the biggest favor.
"Think I can't handle a simple drive?" you murmured, calm and composed, a faint smile playing at the corner of your lips.
Gojo's smirk softened slightly, but his eyes stayed on you, the sharpness fading into something more tender, almost fond. "I'm not worried about your driving," he quipped, his voice low, laced with teasing. "But I'm not about to let you prove your skills with me in the passenger seat. Besides, I have my own reasons."
A flicker of confusion crossed your face. He could literally teleport. Why a car? "You could just warp us there, you know. So why bother?"
Before you could argue further, Gojo flicked his wrist, and the passenger door swung open with that signature flair of his. "Where's the fun in that?" he grinned, leaning lazily against the car. His voice dropped slightly, his gaze never leaving you. "Come on. Get in, Y/N. Humor me."
The casual way he used your name, the slight lilt in his voice, sent your mind into a tailspin. You paused, blinking, trying to recover. "Shouldn't I be the one driving? I'm your assistant, after all," you managed, trying to hold on to your composure.
He shrugged, his grin deepening, as if amused by your attempt to resist. "Maybe. But I'm not letting you drive me around. Nanami or Ijichi might put up with it, but I'm different," he teased, eyes sparkling with amusement. Then, his tone shifted, softer yet still laced with that casual confidence. "I need you in one piece, alright? Besides," he added, leaning in just slightly, "I don't trust anyone else with you. Not even you."
Your breath caught in your throat at the unspoken weight of his words, his usual teasing undercut with something far more sincere.
