The next day, Ye Zexi slept until noon.
When he woke up, the space beside him was already empty. He lay in bed for a while, feeling groggy. It was an unfamiliar environment — the windows had a distinctly Western European style, with sunlight filtering through the thin curtains, casting a warm glow on the corner of the room. It was quite cozy.
Ye Zexi stared for a while, confused. Where was he?
It took him a few moments to recall.
Right! This is the UK — He's at He Jinyun's mother's house!
What time is it? Almost noon! How could He Jinyun not wake him up?
He had slept in on his first visit to He Jinyun's mother's house! How improper!
With that thought, Ye Zexi could no longer stay in bed. He quickly flipped over, got out of bed, and rushed to freshen up.
After getting dressed, he hurried to open the door, only to bump into Zhuang Lan right outside.
Zhuang Lan had just woken up as well. Seeing Ye Zexi, she smiled warmly, "Good morning, Zexi!"
Ye Zexi was initially a bit nervous, but seeing Zhuang Lan's smile, he relaxed and greeted her back, "Good morning, Auntie." Then, he asked, "Did you just wake up too?"
Zhuang Lan yawned and nodded casually, "Of course, didn't I tell you last night there was no need to wake up early today?"
Ye Zexi let out a deep breath, finally able to relax completely. Luckily, they woke up around the same time. It shouldn't count as oversleeping, right?
"Are you hungry?" Zhuang Lan asked. "If you are, I'll make lunch now."
Ye Zexi shook his head. He didn't feel particularly hungry yet, but he was curious — where had He Jinyun gone?
Thinking about it, he asked Zhuang Lan.
Like him, Zhuang Lan had just woken up, so she didn't know either.
But soon enough, both of them figured out where He Jinyun was.
Before they could head downstairs, the aroma of food began wafting through the air.
Ye Zexi, who was accustomed to He Jinyun's cooking, immediately recognized it. "The kitchen!" he declared.
Zhuang Lan nodded in agreement. The smell was indeed from He Jinyun's cooking.
As they reached the kitchen, they were unsurprised to see He Jinyun, busy cooking.
"It smells amazing," Ye Zexi remarked.
He Jinyun turned at the sound of his voice and smiled at the two standing in the doorway. "Hungry?"
Without thinking, Ye Zexi nodded, "Starving!"
Zhuang Lan shot him a look, amused. "You just told me you weren't hungry!"
Ye Zexi shrugged, "Well, I hadn't realized it yet. Now that I've smelled the food, I'm hungry."
Zhuang Lan chuckled; it was her first time hearing such a funny excuse.
He Jinyun, on the other hand, was used to this. Smiling, he said, "Come over and help."
"Sure," Ye Zexi agreed, walking over. "What should I do?"
"Boil some water for the dumplings," He Jinyun instructed.
Watching the two work seamlessly together in the kitchen, Zhuang Lan's smile grew wider. It had been a long time since she had seen her son so relaxed and at ease. Her eyes became misty as she observed them.
