[Side note: I will change "Famous Generals" to "The Great General" because I believe 名将 is better translated as "The Great General."]
At the lakeside villa.
After explaining a few things to Ye Zexi, Gao Shu left behind the final script for 'The Great General' and then got up to leave.
Ye Zexi, now wide awake, lay on the soft bed, staring at the script left behind by Gao Shu. He hesitated for a long time between throwing the script away or throwing it away. Finally, he decided to pick it up to kill some time.
After all, the contract was already signed. If he didn't read it now, he'd still have to read it later.
Although He Jinyun had indeed set him up, at least the pay was something Ye Zexi was satisfied with.
At worst, he'd just endure it. He could quit the industry after the movie was done!
In the novel, 'The Great General' was He Jinyun's first movie that he wrote, directed, and starred in. The film not only won numerous domestic awards but also swept many international ones that year.
With some curiosity, Ye Zexi began to read.
What Ye Zexi hadn't expected, though, was that he would become completely absorbed as he read.
'The Great General' could be summed up in one phrase: "For every general's rise, thousands fall." (1)
These six words painted a grand yet desolate picture of life.
The hundred-thousand-word script gradually unveiled the most important three stages of the protagonist's life to the audience.
From a brash and reckless young man, to a flourishing young general, and finally, to a fearsome commander who commanded respect across the land.
It wasn't about enjoying success or climbing ranks.
It was about the sorrow and solitude of returning alone to the capital, after losing thirty thousand men. (2)
In the end, the general left behind a peaceful and prosperous world for the people, yet he remained utterly alone.
By the time Ye Zexi finished reading, it was already dawn.
It was an exceptional script. Even Ye Zexi couldn't help but be deeply drawn into the characters within the story.
For a moment, a thought crossed his mind—Maybe this script isn't that bad after all.
But that thought was quickly dismissed by Ye Zexi himself.
What do you mean "not bad"?
If not for this script, he'd be able to sleep in every day!
Filming was so exhausting and grueling.
And just a few hours ago, he had pulled an all-nighter because of this script written by He Jinyun.
He was practically risking his life to read it!
Damn it!
The more Ye Zexi thought about it, the angrier he got. He tossed the script aside, buried his head under the covers, and tried to go to sleep.
Ye Zexi slept straight through until the afternoon.
He was awakened by the sound of his phone ringing.
Without checking the caller ID, he grabbed the phone and answered groggily, "Hello?"
His voice was hoarse and heavy with exhaustion—clearly, he hadn't fully woken up yet.
