CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
"Wondering about things..."
Jaeyun was sitting at his desk reading over the notes he took from the interview he had with the previous attorney. He groaned with frustration. "This doesn't make any sense." Taking off his glasses, he leaned backward on his chair.
Suddenly, a knock was heard. "Come in." The door opened, revealing his secretary. "Mr. Sim, there is someone wanting to meet you. Should I let them in?" He sat up correctly looking at his secretary. "Who is it, Minjun?" "Mrs. Yang," he informed him. Jaeyun nodded, "Let her in." Minjun left the room and Mrs. Yang entered. The door closed behind her. "Jaeyun-ah, how are you?" She asked with a sweet voice.
"Mrs. Yang, do you need anything?" He asked. Mrs. Yang chuckled, "Straight to the point, I see. Well, I do need something. Could you come to this banquet?" She walked to his desk, putting down an invitation. "A VIP invitation just for you. It's my company's banquet. It will be hosted tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. sharp. If you are busy tomorrow, then you don't need to come." Jaeyun looked at the invitation and then back at Heejin's mother. "Come if you wish to." She walked out of the office.
Jaeyun stared at the invitation before putting it away. He wondered why Mrs. Yang asked him personally. She usually just mailed it to his parents' house, and his parents would call him to go. He shook the thoughts away before going back to reading the case papers.
Heejin was reading some of the papers her mother sent her. Her mother has been sending some paperwork for her to read over ever since she returned to New York. She took some notes on the papers before putting them aside. Two of the reasons she returned were to give Jaeyun the box and letter. The second one was to attend the annual banquet, which her mother would host once every two years. She didn't go because of school and work, but since she isn't as busy she doesn't have any excuse.
She sighed, just thinking about the banquet and her mother. How this is her life now. How she became like this since childhood. She wondered if she died, and then Jaeyun would find revenge for her. What would happen if he knew all of her pain? Would it be too late? Would it not? She doesn't know the true answer. Leaning against the chair, she put her arm over her eyes.
Would everything change if Sooah was alive? Would Jaeyun be happy? Would they finally be together? Heejin groaned in frustration before softly slapping her face with both of her hands. "Stop thinking about the what if," she scolded herself before going back to the papers scattered on the dinner table.
The next day quickly came, Heejin was sitting on her bed as she scrolled through some articles. Articles about her performances and her family's company. It was mostly the same words about how her performances and the company were a success. Nothing much has changed. She turned off her phone and left the bed. Entering the bathroom, she saw herself in the mirror. Her hair was a bit messy, and even her life. She washed her face before brushing her teeth.
Then she took a shower and changed into a formal blue empire waist. Silver earrings and a simple silver bracelet match perfectly with the dress. She exited her room and into the living room. Walking through the living room, she went to the shoe closet. It only has four different pairs of shoes since she won't be staying longer. Picking a pair of white stilettos heels. Putting them near the entrance, she quickly went back to her bedroom, dried her hair, brushed it, and did simple natural makeup before grabbing her white purse that already had all of her things inside.
She walked out of the apartment into her car. He took off her heels and put them to the side near the driver's side so she could drive without any trouble. She drove to her parents' house first since it was afternoon and the banquet didn't start until the evening. Plus, her mother told her to go to the house before the banquet.
Once she arrived, she exited the car and went to the house. She was greeted by the housekeeper who was at the entrance. "Heejin? You're here?" Heejin smiled before nodding. "Is Mother here, Mrs. Min?" The housekeeper smiled, "She is in her bedroom." She nodded before going upstairs to her parents' bedroom. Knocking three times before entering, she went to the closet of her mother's.
Sitting down on a chair, her mother was doing her makeup. "Mother? I have arrived." Her mother looked at her through the mirror as she was doing her makeup. "Heejin, just in time." Her mother then signals her assistant, who she didn't realize was also in the closet. Her mother's assistant gave her the tablet. Heejin looked at the tablet before her mother.
"I am assigning you to some blind dates," her mother coldly said. Heejin's eyes widened as she looked at her mother. "Mother you can't do that!" Her mother rolled her eyes. "Yes, I can; I am your mother." She clenched her fist. "No, you can't just do that." Her mother glared at her through the mirror, making her gulp. "You aren't getting younger any longer. You will turn 30 in 3 years now."
"But mother, I haven't turned 27 yet! And I want to date someone I like, not who you choose," she argued. Mrs. Yang stopped what she was doing before looking back at her daughter. "Sena's husband wasn't at first who she liked. I assigned her to multiple blind dates, and she just picked him up. Then they started to like each other. You will do the same." Heejin's mouth slightly dropped. "What? Are you saying her husband was a blind date that you assigned her?!"
Mrs. Yang rolled her eyes. "Yes, Heejin. Now, pick your first blind date since I am being generous right now, and my patience is running low any second now." Heejin shook her head. "No." Her mother raised her eyebrow. "No?"
"No, I will not go on any of the blind dates." She gulped out of nervousness. Mrs. Yang stood up before slapping her daughter. "Heejin, don't give me that attitude! You are going on blind dates, or I will do it again." Heejin's eyes widened. Her hands were shaking in fear. She quickly agreed to go on blind dates. Her mother smiled in satisfaction. "Good, now pick your first choice. My patience is ticking."
Heejin politely took the tablet from her mother's assistant's hands, and with her shaky hands, she picked her first blind date. She scanned through them. "I will pick him." She pointed at one of the profiles. Her mother looked before giving her a nod. "Good choice." She gave back the tablet to the assistant before walking out. "Heejin, if you still don't like the blinds, then you can pick your own date or whatever," her mother shouted as she walked out of the room.
She walked past the housekeeper without saying anything and into her car. The housekeeper watched her leave the house with a sigh, knowing her mother had given her a handful of words. Taking deep breaths and letting herself calm down, Heejin leaned against the seat of her car.
