Tree had been staring at Taylor for a good few minutes now, her eyes squinting slightly as though she were trying to solve a riddle she hadn't been expecting. The two were sitting on Taylor's tour bus, enjoying a quiet moment after a long day of rehearsals when Tree leaned closer, her brow furrowed in curiosity.

"Taylor," Tree began slowly, her voice full of confusion, "why are your eyes two different colors? Has that always been a thing, or am I just losing it?"

Taylor immediately picked up on the opportunity for mischief. She blinked innocently, feigning ignorance. "What are you talking about? Both of my eyes are blue, Tree," she said in a voice so casual, it nearly convinced even herself.

Tree blinked in surprise, leaning in a little closer. "No, I'm telling you, one is definitely green, and the other is blue. How did I never notice this before?"

Taylor shrugged, keeping her face perfectly neutral. "You must be seeing things. My eyes have always been the same color. You sure you're not just tired?"

Tree shook her head, now even more convinced that something was off. "No way, Tay. I'm looking right at you. One of your eyes is green! Don't mess with me!" She leaned closer still, inspecting Taylor's eyes like they were some sort of optical illusion.

Taylor, desperately trying to suppress the grin that was threatening to break through, leaned back and sighed dramatically. "Tree, I think you need to take a break. Maybe drink some water. My eyes are blue, like they've always been."

Tree's face twisted in confusion as she leaned back in her chair, rubbing her forehead. "No, no, I swear I'm seeing it right! One is blue, and the other is definitely green. Are you seriously telling me I've been looking at your eyes for years and only now noticing this?"

Taylor's lips twitched, and she covered her mouth to hide the growing smile. "I mean... maybe it's the lighting?" she offered, her voice full of faux concern. "Or maybe you're just... imagining things?"

Tree's jaw dropped, now visibly flustered. "Imagining things?! Taylor, I'm not losing my mind! I *know* what I'm seeing!"

"Are you sure though?" Taylor asked, doing her best to keep a straight face. "It sounds like you're kind of losing it."

Tree threw her hands up in exasperation. "Tay, don't gaslight me! I know what I'm seeing! One of your eyes is blue and the other is green, I swear!"

Taylor pressed her lips together, fighting hard to keep the laughter at bay, but the playful glint in her eyes was starting to give her away. Tree narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "Wait... are you messing with me right now?"

Taylor shrugged, her tone still innocent. "I have no idea what you're talking about."Tree huffed, running her hands through her hair in frustration. "I don't understand! One eye is green, one eye is blue—this isn't normal! Am I seriously losing my mind here?"

That was the last straw. Taylor couldn't hold it in any longer. The laughter she had been stifling burst out in full force, and she doubled over, clutching her stomach as she howled with laughter. "Okay, okay! I can't—Oh my God, Tree, I'm sorry!" Taylor gasped between laughs. "You're not losing it. I have heterochromia."

Tree blinked in shock, her mouth hanging open. "Hetero-what? What is that?"

Still giggling, Taylor wiped a tear from her eye. "Heterochromia! It means my eyes are two different colors. It's a genetic thing. I've had it forever."

Tree leaned back, clearly relieved but still looking at Taylor with a mix of disbelief and frustration. "You mean to tell me I've been freaking out for nothing? You've had this the whole time, and you let me go crazy thinking I was imagining it?"

Taylor grinned, still catching her breath. "You were just so confused! I couldn't help it. Your face was priceless."

Tree groaned but couldn't help laughing too, shaking her head. "You're a menace, you know that? A total menace. I really thought I was losing my mind."

Taylor leaned over and patted Tree on the shoulder, still laughing. "Hey, you've got to admit, it was kind of funny."

Tree crossed her arms, trying to hold onto her frustration, but a smile tugged at the corner of her mouth. "Yeah, yeah, whatever. Just don't expect me to believe anything you say next time you try to mess with me."

Taylor winked, her mismatched eyes twinkling with amusement. "Noted. But admit it, I got you good."

Tree huffed dramatically, but eventually chuckled, shaking her head. "Yeah, you got me alright. You really had me thinking I was losing my mind."

The two laughed together, the air lightening once again, as Taylor gave Tree another playful nudge. "Guess you'll never miss it again, huh?"

"Definitely not," Tree said with a laugh, finally at ease.
