Maths induces confusion

It was just an ordinary afternoon at the office. Tree Paine sat at her desk, papers scattered all around her, the numbers blurring into a chaotic mess. Album sales, tour revenues, streaming figures—it was all a maze of zeros and decimal points. She had been at it for what felt like hours, trying to figure out the exact revenue from Taylor Swift's latest record-breaking album.

But this was a tough one. Some absurdly huge number multiplied by another massive figure, compounded by complex royalty percentages. Math had never been her strong suit, and the sheer size of the numbers made her head spin. She squinted at the paper, muttering under her breath, "How on earth do you multiply two numbers this big?"

Across the room, Taylor sat on a couch, her guitar resting on her knee. She was scribbling lyrics in her notebook, humming quietly to herself, totally immersed in her creative zone. She seemed oblivious to Tree's frustration—or so Tree thought.

Without even glancing up from her notebook, Taylor spoke casually, her voice light. "It's 283,763,112."

Tree blinked, momentarily confused. "What?"

Taylor's pen didn't stop moving. "The answer to what you're trying to figure out. It's 283,763,112."

Tree stared at her, stunned. She hadn't even said the numbers aloud, had she? How could Taylor know what problem she was working on? "Hold on," Tree said, grabbing her calculator. She punched in the numbers, frowning as she double-checked her work. The screen blinked back at her.

283,763,112.

Exactly what Taylor had said.

Tree's eyes widened, her jaw practically dropping. "How...how did you do that? I didn't even tell you what the numbers were!"

Taylor finally looked up, grinning as if she'd just played the world's best practical joke. "I could see what you were working on. The numbers aren't that hard once you break them down."

Tree blinked at her, absolutely floored. "You just...you just did that math in your head? While you were writing a song?"

Taylor shrugged like it was no big deal. "Yeah. I mean, math's kind of like music. It's all patterns and puzzles, right?"

Tree was dumbfounded. She sat back in her chair, still clutching the calculator like it had suddenly become useless. "But...you're a songwriter, Taylor! Since when are you secretly a math genius?"

Taylor laughed, finally putting down her pen and stretching out on the couch. "I don't know, I've always liked math. I guess I just never talk about it. You've never asked."

Tree was speechless for a second, staring at Taylor in disbelief. "You've been sitting there, writing a song, and then you just—what? Casually solved this insane math problem like it's nothing?"

Taylor's grin widened. "Pretty much."

Tree shook her head, letting out a disbelieving laugh. "You've been holding out on me, Swift. I've known you for years, and I'm only just finding out you're a math whiz?"

Taylor stood, walking over to the desk and looking down at the papers Tree had been agonizing over. She picked one up, glancing at the complex figures before tossing it back down with a smirk. "I like to keep some surprises up my sleeve. Keeps things interesting."

Tree crossed her arms, still staring at her like she'd just revealed she could fly. "First the rock albums, now this. Is there anything you can't do?"

Taylor tapped her chin playfully, pretending to think. "Well, I've never been great at ice skating. But I'm working on it."

Tree laughed, shaking her head in disbelief. "You're unbelievable."

Taylor gave her a mock bow. "Thank you, thank you. I try."

Tree leaned back in her chair, still smiling as she looked at her friend, now sitting back down on the couch. It was moments like this that reminded her how multi-faceted Taylor really was. Behind the massive stardom and the world tours, there was always something new to discover.

"So, what's next?" Tree asked, tossing her calculator aside. "You gonna start tutoring in your spare time?"

Taylor chuckled, picking up her guitar again. "Only if you need help with your taxes."

Tree grinned, watching as Taylor's focus shifted back to her song. It was comforting, in a way, knowing that no matter how complex life became, Taylor always found a way to bring simplicity to it. Whether it was music, math, or whatever else, she had a way of making the impossible seem easy.

As Tree watched her, she realized with a smile that no matter how many surprises Taylor had up her sleeve, she was glad to be along for the ride.

"Just wait until you see me tackle calculus," Taylor added with a wink.

Tree laughed, shaking her head again. "I don't doubt it for a second, Swift."

And with that, the office returned to its familiar hum of creativity and chaos—except now, Tree had even more reasons to be in awe of the woman sitting across from her.
