Jamie sauntered over, his eyes locked on mine.
"Mind if I join you?" he asked, nodding toward the empty chair.
Emily's eyes darted between us, sensing tension.
"Uh, no. Go ahead."
Jamie sat, his presence commanding attention.
"So, Alex," Jamie began, "what's the verdict on Shakespeare's Romeo?"
I raised an eyebrow.
"You care about Shakespeare?"
Jamie chuckled.
"Surprise me, don't you?"
Emily excused herself, sensing our conversation was about to become private.
"I'll leave you two to discuss literature," she said with a wink.
As Emily departed, Jamie's gaze intensified.
"About earlier...I didn't mean to scare you."
I shrugged.
"You didn't."
Jamie's eyes crinkled.
"Liar."
His teasing tone caught me off guard.
