Paris, France
Two years ago
Victoria woke to the sound of knocking on the door. Her head was pounding, a dull ache matching the alarm that went off inside her body. She glanced towards the hotel door, but the knocking stopped just as abruptly as it had begun.
Turning her head to the other side, she saw Engfa, still asleep under the covers, her hair splayed across her face. Victoria gently brushed it away, exposing Engfa's peaceful expression.
I'm so screwed, Victoria thought.
The memory of last night rushed back. She and Engfa-Voss. Of course, she remembered everything. The dancing, the stolen glances, the tension that simmered between them all night. The words Engfa had whispered in her ear, words that made Victoria forget everything else, drowning in the passion that followed.
Carefully, she slid out of bed, gathering her clothes from the floor, dressing quickly. Her heart raced as she grabbed her bag. Without a second glance at the sleeping Engfa, she hurried out of the suite.
Her bodyguards stood outside the door, watching a man Victoria immediately recognized. Without hesitation, she grabbed his arm, dragging him with her toward the elevator at the end of the hall.
Leon Montoya chuckled, "Victoria, relax," he said as the elevator doors slid open.
Victoria shoved him inside, hitting the button for the ground floor. She dismissed her bodyguards with a wave of her hand. This conversation needed to be private.
As the elevator descended, she slammed her palm against the emergency stop button. The elevator jolted to a halt, and Leon's smirk faded slightly as he realized Victoria wasn't in the mood for games.
Her eyes blazed with fury as she turned to face him. "What do you want?"
Leon grinned, unbothered. "You never cease to amaze me," he said, his fingers lightly brushing her hair back behind her ear. "A night with Voss... Is that why you've been protecting her all this time? Tell me, Victoria, is this a personal scandal in our organization?" His voice dripped with sarcasm, ending with a bitter laugh.
Without warning, Victoria shoved him hard against the elevator wall. "You've just stretched my patience thinner than paper, Leon," she hissed, her eyes narrowing dangerously. "What I do is none of your business. My decisions about Voss are final. And if you think you can follow Richard's plan, the one you've always protected all these years like a little pawn, then understand this-you're in my way."
In a swift move, Leon reversed their positions, pinning Victoria against the wall. His grin was predatory, eyes gleaming with challenge.
"Victoria," he whispered, his face inches from hers. "A leader should know what's best. You seem obsessed with keeping this so-called brilliant Voss on your side." His grip tightened on her wrists, forcing them against the wall. "But your path is not mine. And this time, your decision is reckless. Voss is too dangerous to be left unchecked. I've made up my mind-I'm done with her."
Victoria yanked her arms free and seized Leon by the throat, slamming him against the opposite wall. He struggled against her grip, but still, he smiled, unafraid.
"Go ahead," Victoria whispered, her voice low and dangerous. "But mark my words-if you make a move against her, you, and everyone involved, will suffer a humiliating defeat." She leaned in, her voice a deadly whisper. "You're too stupid, Leon. That's why the council didn't choose you as leader. Your mind can never compete with mine. Your actions..." She released her grip on his neck. "Will never surpass mine."
