It had been over a year since Engfa last saw Jeff Satur lurking outside her beach house in Phuket.
At first, Engfa had only confided in Faye about that unsettling night. Faye had immediately suggested reinstating the tight security measures they used to have. They discussed the plan with Charlotte, who reluctantly agreed, despite the inconvenience. Soon after, their mansion on the outskirts of Bangkok was back under high-level protection.
Six months ago, Engfa and Faye decided it was time to loop in the rest of their team. They called a meeting with the core group at Warasorn Diamonds, including Tina, to strategize. The goal was clear: establish more robust preventative measures and reopen the investigation into Jeff. But despite their best efforts, six months had passed with no new leads. They were still in the dark.
Now, almost 20 months since Charlotte Austin's explosive article about Voss, the trail had gone cold. There were no updates on the case, and the hunt for Jeff Satur seemed to be at a frustrating standstill.
"The international diamond business conference is set for Warsaw on the 26th, which is next Monday-"
Nudee's voice faded into the background as she listed Engfa's upcoming events.
Engfa stood by her office window, gazing out at the bustling city of Bangkok from her skyscraper perch.
"P'Fa..." Nudee paused mid-sentence.
Engfa turned, offering a soft smile. "Thanks, Nudee. You can get back to work."
Nudee sighed, knowing Engfa wasn't really present.
Since Jeff's reappearance, Engfa had lost her usual calm demeanor. Nudee could feel that Jeff had gotten under her skin again, and this time it seemed to be affecting Voss as well.
"Alright, if you need anything, just let me know, P'Fa. I'll head out," Nudee said, nodding as she left Engfa's office.
Engfa sank into her chair and opened the Satur folder she had been poring over for the past year. It was filled with FBI information on Jeff's movements over the past year, but one place remained in her mind: Massachusetts.
Engfa couldn't shake the feeling that there was a reason for Jeff's visit, almost daring fate by getting so close to the FBI's territory. She suspected he had connections there from his time at Harvard, but every time she tried to dig deeper, she hit a mental block.
Closing her laptop, Engfa grabbed her phone from the desk and stepped out of her office following by her bodyguards.
As Engfa stepped into the elevator, a soft chime from her phone made her smile-it was a message from Charlotte.
Charlotte: Can my amazing girlfriend have lunch with me today?
Engfa: Yes. She can, Miss Austin.
Moments later, Charlotte replied.
Charlotte: Meet me at the Italian café near my office, baby. I'm heading out now.
Before Engfa could type a response, the elevator doors slid open. She took a step out but was abruptly jostled as someone collided with her. Her phone slipped from her grasp, and in an instant, her security team moved in, forming a protective barrier around her. The person who had bumped into her was swiftly surrounded by their own bodyguards, tension rising between the two groups.
"I'm so sorry! That was clumsy of me," the woman exclaimed. Engfa bent down to retrieve her phone, which the stranger was also picking up.
"Please, stand up," Engfa said, extending a hand. As their eyes met, Engfa realized the woman looked familiar. "I'm sorry.. Have we met before? You seem familiar."
