"Hey Burke! Where ya headed?" Wyatt jogs up to me.

"I got baseball, remember?" I raise my eyebrows and give him a quick punch in the arm. "I gotta practice for the big tournament try outs next month."

"Not like you need to practice... you are the best baseball player I know. Heck, you are the best player in this whole town!" Wyatt moves his arm in a broad shape for exaggeration, but accidentally bumps his locker while doing it.

"Thanks bro. But I cannot wait for summer! No school and all the time we want!" I smile and put my Geometry book in my locker, waiting for the final bell to ring.

"Well... it is March... only a couple more months and then we are HOME FREE!"

I laugh. Wyatt is my best friend and has been since 2nd grade. We both love baseball, but Wyatt is too clumsy to ever consider playing it. Instead, he's in Theater Club. I've been to a few of his shows; he's actually really good! On the side of that, he is really funny. He can make anyone laugh. Once, in 5th grade, he made the meanest, stoniest substitute teacher fall over herself in laughter. Me on the other hand, am super good at baseball (not to brag) but that's what all my friends say. Wyatt, Jeremy, Ethan, Parker, Blake, Lincoln, Ian, Caden ... well, Caden is apparently "too cool" to say it aloud, but I know he means it.

RRRRRIIINNNNGGGG!

"Whelp, see ya tomorrow Hudson!" Wyatt says before trotting to the back door to the bus stops. On his way, he bumps into a girl and knocks all the books out of her arms. "Ugh... sorry!" He groans.

Grabbing my backpack, I chuckle and walk out the door. As I'm walking down the steps and out onto the sidewalk in front of Hotwire Falls Public Middle School, I suddenly hear,

"Look out!" I swivel to the right and see Keira crashing towards me on her bicycle. I dodge her with ease and grace. She smiles at me but then accidentally stomps on her brakes. I dash over and grab the handle bars to keep her from flying forward. Keira falls sideways and lands on the ground, unharmed. I grab her hand and pull her up.

"Wow... thanks Hudson..." Keira smiles and pushes her long blond hair back.

"No problem..." I say, gazing into her bright blue eyes. We stand there smiling like a bunch of goofy dogs, until she winks and says,

"Gotta run!" She dashes over to her bike, hops up, and rides away. I stand there, in a daze, until I glance at my watch.

"Shoot! It's four thirty!" I sprint in the direction of the baseball fields, without looking back to see Keira cycling into the sunset or the school I've called home for years. If only I knew I wouldn't be seeing much more of both ever again.
