My mom and I are going school shopping today.

"A new school deserves fresh stuff," my mother had said the night before.

As we drive across town to the store, I look out the window.  Ugh.  This town is so bland.  Boring colors, graffiti... not at all like Hotwire Falls.

We pull up to the store and get out of our stinky mini van we are renting.  After going in and grabbing a cart (which has an extremely squeaky wheel by the way), we walk to the school supplies section.  I look over the selection of backpacks.

"Ooh Hudson look!" My mother holds up a blue and white cameo backpack. "This one is nice."

Yes, the old Hudson would've adored that bag.  Not the new Hudson.

"Naw... how 'bout this?" I hold up an all black backpack.

"Hmm... okay..." she replies. "Lunchboxes..." she says, looking at her list.  She turns.  I am already stuffing an all black lunch bag into the cart.

Okay, so I'm pretty sure you know how it goes down.  Everything is black.  I even buy a black hoodie.

As my mother and I drive home with my new stuff, she asks,

"Hudson, is there something you would like to talk to me about?" She frowns.

I plaster on my fake smile, and say "No... why?"

"Oh... no reason," she exhales.

We are silent for the rest of the drive home.
