"Are you really Spiderman??" The girl asked the little boy, breathing heavily from running. Now they were walking side by side down the street, near the Sanam Chai Road, finally losing track of that drunk man."Mai cai! I just said that to scare him, phi. I'm Finn Chatri! And you?"
"Oh... that's what I thought na! I knew that Spiderman wore a suit and you're not! And when you told me to run, I just thought that if you were really a Spiderman, you would have used the spider web and you would have lift us up between the buildings and that's when I knew you were lying to him! But, I'm glad you were there to save me, nong Spiderman. I'm Becbec by the way... and you?"
"I already told you my name, silly phi. It's Finn na kub."
"Finn?? The one in the Adventure Time?
"Eh? From where..?"
"The Adventure Time! Finn the human and Jack the dog ka!"
"Mai, I'm not the one in the Adventure Time, I came out from inside my Mae." The little boy looked around, ignoring the girl's question. In front of the street was a small area with grass and a wooden bench. "Do you want to sit there, phi?"
The girl shrugged. "Sure ka."
They walked through the people on the street until they reached the bench. Before they sat down, the girl took out a handkerchief and brushed the dust and dried plants off the bench, as she always did. She sat down and patted the seat a few times with her left hand, to tell the boy that, 'it's okay now, you can sit down.'
The girl remained silent for a moment while the little boy was in his mind thinking of what to say.
"My Mae packed me two sandwiches today, and I haven't eaten any. Do you want one, phi?"
"Are you sure I can have one?" She asked.
The little boy nodded and gave the other sandwich to her.
"Oh yummy... this is delicious na ka!" The girl moaned, enjoying her sandwich.
"Of course it is, my Mae made it!" He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. "Um... Phi kub, I haven't seen you around before. What are you doing here alone?" He stopped, feeling a little guilty for lying.
Because to be honest, the first time he had seen her was a weeks ago while he was walking through the streets after leaving school. At first, he thought she was maybe just a lost tourist in Bangkok's street. But then she keeps coming back and sometimes she was sitting alone on the bench in that small park. With just one look, he knew there was something different about her. Somehow he felt like he need to protect her, even though he was just a little boy.
She looks insecure and fragile, like a little girl of the same age as him, she behaved in a way younger than he was and she could very well be the same age as his Mae. But no, she looked like a scared little girl.
Sometimes, when she was waiting to cross the street, Finn would come over from the other side of the street and look at her. Look how distracted she seemed, and it was hard to tell, but why was she talking to herself?
Sometimes, she would play with some of the cats and dogs that came up to her, talking to them as if they were very good friends. Finn wondered if she needed a friend? He could be that new friend. But instead, he kept his distance so she couldn't see him and he wondered how he could give her a clue of his presence without scaring her. And without thinking twice, he decided to protect her when that drunk man showed up trying to molest her.
"Phi... it's dangerous to walk alone in this big city, you know? Didn't your Mae tell you that?"
"Ah... I could ask you the same question, dummy!" She told him back. "But my mommy doesn't know I'm here! I ran away from home! I don't like my house, it's boring. What about you?"
"My Mae works in a salon across the street. She doesn't know I'm here either. She thought I was with uncle Mario."
"Who is uncle Mario?" She asked.
"He's Mae's BF."
"What is P..F?"
"He's B..F, phi! He's a boyfriend! Have you never heard of that? I always hear Auntie Nam, Auntie Faye and Auntie Fa say that. They are my Mae's BFFs."
"What is B..F..F?"
"It's "best friends forever." Haven't you heard of that either? I thought adults always used those words, phi..."
"Oh, I think it's because I'm not an adult. How old do you think I am?"
"26? Like my Mae?"
"Eh? Because I would look like your Mae?"
"You look old, Becbec, like her and all of my aunties."
"It's not true, I'm 7!"
The little boy jumped a little and leaned back, forgetting the bench didn't have a back, causing him falling backwards onto the floor. "Aw? Like me? But you look older!"
And he started laughing with the girl because she was already laughing out loud at the little boy's fall. Finn got up from the floor quickly and went back to the seat.
"Cai!! You're 7 too? That's great!" She let out a playful giggle still amused by the boy's fall. "My mommy said it's because I'm special." She continued saying.
"Oh.. na kub?"
"Cai ka." Becbec thought for a moment. "Do you want to come play video games at my house? I have new shark games but I don't have any friends to play it with. Mommy is too old to play with me, it's kinda boring."
They stood there, not saying anything, looking at each other. She had never invited a friend over to her house. She could but it was just that she never had one. There were many reasons why she never had one, but they weren't important anymore.
Finn raised his hand to scratch his nose.
"Um..." He said. "Sure kub, that would be great, but it's late now. Maybe tomorrow na? We'll meet here, again.. okay kub?"
"Okay! I'll see you tomorrow then. You'll come back here again, ka?"
"Kub, sure. I'll see you tomorrow, Becbec. See you later na!"
"See you later ka, Spiderman!" She watched him go until he disappeared as far as possible.
To be continued.
