"Finn luk..?" Freen called again. No answer.
They both have been looking around the nearby buildings, wondering which one Finn might be hiding in, sulking that he couldn't see his best friend.
"Maybe he went to see Becbec?" Mario suggested. They both stood in front of one of the second floor windows of the nearby store and now Freen started to panic when her son was nowhere to be found, she thought that maybe Finn missed Becky so much that he started to act strange and sulky.
However, what Mario said would make sense because this wasn't the first time her son secretly went out to go see Becky. Except, she couldn't understand why her son did it this time. He didn't have to hide his best friend anymore because Freen already knew about her, so why did he do that?
But, it could be because he thought Freen wouldn't let him if she knew he was going to find Becky. Of course she wouldn't let him go alone, it was dangerous to wander around the street alone, Freen thought. And that could be a reason why he left without saying anything. And now, it was her job to find out if she was right.
Faye and Nam offered to help, but Freen told them that she knew where to find her son and in case Finn came back to the salon alone, they would let her and Mario know immediately.
They came up with a plan to split up, while Freen went to look for her son in that mini park that Finn and Becky claimed as their secret place, and Mario went to go to Becky's house since he had already been there once before.
Freen walked to the park, which was only a five or seven minute walk from her salon. At first, when she arrived at the park, she started to panic again when she saw no trace of her son or Becky, except for a few other children on the swings. But then she remembered when they went to look for Becky weeks ago, Finn knew exactly where she was hiding. It was inside the tunnel.
Freen didn't know how Becky managed to get into the tunnel because it looked so narrow from afar. As she reached the tunnel slide, she could hear familiar voices which made her relieved that her son was there with Becky. So she texted Mario saying that she had found them. But before she could kneel down to look inside, she heard a conversation that stopped her movements.
"Why do I always have to be the daddy? I'm a girl!"
Freen heard Becky say in frustration which made Freen laugh softly.
"Because I already have a mommy, but I don't have a daddy." Finn replied. "You can still be one, phi, I can draw a mustache on you if you want?"
Freen smiled with teary eyes. She didn't know what she was feeling exactly at that moment. She was touched by Finn's statement that he didn't have a father, but she was also touched because it was like Finn knew that he and Becky were more than just best friends. She felt excited because Finn wanted Becky to be his other father. The poor boy didn't know that his instincts were right.
Then Freen heard Becky's voice again, feeling emotionally burdened by the secret she was hiding from her son. "Where's your daddy? Why don't you have one?"
"I don't know... I don't like asking Mae about that because I don't want her to be sad."
"Maybe your daddy went to heaven like my daddy?"
"Ka... I guess?"
Freen was breaking down at that moment. Finn never questioned about his father after that one time, the only time Finn asked about his other father.
It was a few weeks after Finn started school, he suddenly asked Freen carefully as they cuddled and watched a movie. Finn asked in such a way that Freen knew he had been thinking about it. At five years old, she guessed he started learning a little more of his ABCs and getting to the bathroom on time. Finn has always been a sensitive soul with big, wise chocolate eyes that took in more than he probably thought he was as more of an observer.
