an absolute clusterfuck

As the sun peeked through the curtains, Kat stretched out on her bed with the memories of last night flooding in. As she laid there, she couldn't help but smile as she replayed the kiss in her head. She hadn't expected such an electrifying feeling to ignite her body like that with someone last night.

Turning around, she grabbed her phone from her nightstand to see Max missing. It was a little past 10 which meant he was at work. Texts from Amara and Hailey flooded her phone as she laughed at the drunken texts but there was one main topic: Morgan.

Amara: I can't believe last night happened! Oh my god!

Hailey: oh my god. wait what happened after you dropped us off?

Amara: wake uppppp

Kat chuckled at the messages before responding and mentioning to debrief at brunch. Getting out of bed and showering, she couldn't help but think of the kiss. That's all her brain could think of. Was it a spur of the moment? Did it mean anything?

It was a one-time occurrence and she knew it. She couldn't help but feel disappointment with knowing that it was only one time. But she knew that she just cheated as well. Holy fuck. Cheating on Max.

As much as she wanted to block the memory out of her head, she couldn't move past it. But this secret would have to go to the grave with her. Max was the one.

The doorbell rang and the girls poured in with their local brunch orders and handed Kat hers.

"Tell us everything!" Amara bounced with glee as she sat down and unboxed her order.

As Kat began telling the recap of last night, the girls would interfere and put in their perspectives of the night as well. A nightly recap was mandatory in their group.

"Ok but then yall left," Hailey grinned as she looked at Kat.

Kat felt herself questioning on telling her friends the truth. But she knew she could trust them.

"I did something bad" she whispered as if anyone else was home.

As Kat recalled the event of last night, she watched both of her best friends have their jaws drop on the floor. Amara nearly choked on her waffles. "Oh my god what was it like?!".

"It felt... good. But guys... like... Max," Kat said as she admitted how she felt aloud. It was an uninvited thought but she couldn't help it.

"Oh my god" Kat's face went pale.

"Kat? What? Are you okay?" Hailey asked noticing her change in expression and tone.

"I- I don't know," Kat panicked as she looked at her two best friends. "I kissed Morgan. I live with Max... I mean Max is my boyfriend oh my god".

"Is Max the one though?" Amara questioned her, earning a nudge from Hailey.

"Are you going to tell him?" Hailey asked Kat supportively.

Kat's heart sank at the thought of having to tell Max. "I mean no! We didn't plan to kiss! I don't want to ruin anything".

Amara shot Kat a look that she couldn't identify.

"What?"

"Hailey, can I tell her?" Amara asked ignoring Kat.

Kat's heart began to race with a million questions.

"Well you might as well," Hailey exclaimed.

"You just don't seem in this relationship as much anymore," Amara blurted, "Like girl you've never seemed as excited with Max as you have now".

Kat felt herself freeze as she took in what her friends were saying. Hailey put her hand on Kat's as she poured Kat some coffee.

"Listen... you just don't seem into it. And this is how you should feel. Like I have Ben. I love Ben and I was so excited for our five years. You hit three and didn't even seem excited," Hailey softly said. "'Maybe this is good".

"But what if he finds out?" Kat asked ignoring the revelation that Hailey just laid out.

"We won't tell" Amara promised. "But maybe this is good".

A brief silence followed the conversation as Kat began to think. She had been out of it. No more dates. No more sex really. Just work. Co-existing. They were right and she was in denial.

"If you feel something for Morgan, don't pretend it didn't happen" Hailey said as she noticed her best friend beginning to tear up.

"I don't know how I'm feeling. I do care about Max a lot but it was one time? Max could be the one?" Kat admitted as her voice trembled.

"Then you just need to figure this out. But notice how you didn't mention love and how he 'could' be the one and isn't the one?" Amara pointed out as she sipped her coffee.

As they sat around the table, all three of the girls felt the weight of the newly founded secret. The laughter and excitement of last night had disintegrated and was replaced by a cluster of mixed emotions.

"This is an absolute clusterfuck" Kat groaned with her face in her hands.

"Wait but can we discuss the fact that we sang that bad?" Hailey pointed out making the girls erupt in laughter. Pulling up their camera rolls, the horrid singing echoed through the speakers making them all internally cringe.

"I've had it. Turn it off!" Amara groaned as she covered her face with her hands to avoid the embarrassment.

"That's the sound of us being an absolute clusterfuck" Hailey cringed as she put her phone down, making the girls laugh.

With that, all three of them were back to sitting in silence as Kat contemplated everything in her head. Despite rhetorical conversation picking back up, she could only think of one thing. It may have not been the right thing to think about but she couldn't help it.

As her friends filed out of the apartment and Max filed in, she felt herself contemplating the possibility of what could have been.
