The next morning, Kat woke up with an unsettling pang in her stomach. She hadn't slept much. Her dreams were scattered replays of her reality — Max's smile, their takeout nights, the comfort of his arms with Morgan's laugh, his Cheshire Cat smile, and his magnetic touch all blending together.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand snapping her back to reality. Morgan. She wanted to pick up the phone but couldn't with the spiraling thoughts in her head.

What did he mean he doesn't mind complicated? Was she just a fun time? Did she throw everything away for a hookup?

But at the same time, she knew she owed it to him to pick up the call. Her thumb finally hovered over the screen, heart pounding out of her chest, before she pressed the button before the last ring.

"Hello?" her voice came out softer than intended, like a whisper.

"Kat... I didn't think you were going to pick up" Morgan sharply exhaled.

Just her name rolling off his lips was enough to make her swoon once more. The memories from the bar and the car ride home came flooding back in.

A nervous chuckle came out of her mouth, "Honestly, I almost didn't pick up".

There was a slight silence that filled the air and suddenly her apartment felt small.

"I don't understand. Do you want us to go back to being strangers?" Morgan asked confused.

Kat swallowed feeling the weight of the question. She didn't want that but her life was complicated. "I messed up Morgan. What I did was real and every conversation we have had is genuine. But I didn't mean for all of this".

Morgan was silent, letting her words sink in. "Where does this leave us? Pretending we never met?".

Kat hesitated. "I can't pretend Morgan. What happened... it's part of me. But it's also something I need to get over and work on. I can't do that with you in the picture right now. You'll be touring soon enough!".

"You know, Kat," he started with his voice staying calm and steady, "I'm not one to shy away from complicated".

Kat found herself trying to catch her breath as she understood his proposition, holding the phone away from her so he wouldn't hear, she held back a gasp.

"I get that it's a mess," he admitted with a hint of amusement in his voice, "But I'm leaving in a few days actually. My trip is somewhat extended... and we aren't here forever. It's just.,. Not that serious. We can just enjoy it while it lasts".

Kat's heart skipped a beat. She was craving whatever short-term fun this would become. Maybe it was a distraction... maybe it was deflecting. "Are you sure?" she asked.

The words from his mouth were almost freeing and gravitating for Kat, all at the same time. She exhaled at once waiting for his response.

"I'm sure" he chuckled on the other side.

"Alright then," she whispered reassuring herself, "Let's see where this goes".

On the other end, she could practically hear his smile on the other end of the call, "Good I'll pick you up at eight".
