Kat spent the next few days sulking in a fog between crying and being unable to move on the couch and staring blankly at her phone. She ignored Morgan's texts and Amara and Hailey's phone calls and texts.
I love you I'm sorry. The words that she never said were echoing on repeat.
Max showing up with Olive Garden breadsticks and Chinese because she wanted both. His laugh that would make her feel lighter when she felt weighed down. And all the times he would hold her while they snuggled in bed. Now she let him go.
Why didn't she see it sooner? Had she been fooling herself and manipulating herself? She couldn't help but feel guilt as she questioned if she was just secretly craving something more dangerous and exciting.... something like Morgan.
Grabbing her phone, she scrolled past Morgan's texts and found herself staring at Max's name. Eyes glued on the screen and fingers hesitating to press his contact, she found herself questioning her own actions.
Kat: I ruined everything. I know I've hurt you but I need you to know that I love you, I'm sorry. I never should have let it come to this.
Hitting send, she felt her stomach twist and turn in ways she couldn't comprehend. How did she really feel?
Sitting on the couch, she bundled herself in her blanket waiting for her phone to light up. It felt like hours had gone by but it had only been ten minutes when her phone rang.
Leaping at the sound, her eyes became disappointed when the screen read Mom.
"Hi Mom!" Kat greeted her mom who was most likely in the kitchen cooking a homemade meal that she missed so dearly.
"When were you going to tell me?" she shrieked on the other side catching Kat by surprise.
Panic flooded her body as she carefully covered her own mess.
"Mom I-"
"Max told me how you have been spending more time with friends when I called, that's great honey!"
Kat let out a breath that she didn't even know she was holding back. Her mom's cheerful tone was a relief as she wasn't forced to face the disappointment and questions.
"Yeah I've been busy" Kat mumbled.
Her mom continued oblivious to the pressure Kat felt under. "That is so good Kat. You can't spend all your time with him. He's wonderful sweetie but don't forget about balance".
The irony was bittersweet as she couldn't even balance anything in her life.
"Yeah," Kat replied plainly trying to mask the dull ache in her stomach.
The call continued as Kat felt the aching pain grow in her stomach as the lies seamlessly rolled off her tongue. The thought of explaining everything to her mom was making her almost spiral, it felt impossible.
Kat found herself staring at the messages Morgan texted her to feel something. There were more than a dozen texts, ranging from questions about hanging out and jokes to heavier ones towards the end.... yet she never said a thing.
But Morgan was everything that Max wasn't. He was unpredictable and thought provoking. He had a magnetic pull that scared her but intrigued her at the same time. His charm was dangerous, and deep down, she knew it was what dragged her to him and away from Max.
She read his last message.
Morgan: I'm here for you when you need me.
Her fingers hovered over the keyboard before she texted him back.
Kat: things are complicated I don't think we should talk
Before she could even look away, her eyes widened at the sight of Morgan typing back almost immediately.
Morgan: I don't mind complicated
