As they wrapped up their conversation around the park and headed toward their cars, Hailey leaned in with a grin, "Have you texted Morgan?".
Kat's heart fluttered at the mention of his name, "Should I?".
"You kissed the guy. Why not?" Amara exclaimed.
"I just... I don't want to make anything worse," Kat bit her lip. "He probably thinks I'm a complete mess".
"Welcome to the club," Hailey joked. "He is open to it... so why not explore how you feel? He likes that you're a mess... you're his mess".
Although she couldn't shake off the feeling about Max, she knew she owed it to herself. "I'll think about it" Kat laughed with some confidence. "That's gross I'm not his mess".
It was as if he was listening, Kat spotted a text from Morgan.
Morgan: let's hang out again soon
A smile crept on her face despite the anxiety growing in her body. This was a sign. She could either ignore his message or text him back... and she knew that she wanted to text him back.
"Love is in the air" Amara teased Kat.
"Morgan is in the park if anything. Talk about timing" Hailey grinned at the girls.
Taking a deep breath, Kat responded.
Kat: i would love to. when are you free?
"Girl why didn't you wait?" Amara shrieked.
"Wait what? Why?" Kat panicked.
Hailey sighed, "Rule of thumb. Make him wait for three minutes at LEAST".
Kat groaned "Do I seem desperate?".
"You seem whipped" Amara snickered earning a laugh from Hailey and a look from Kat.
"I'm going to go but I'll see you guys" Kat waved as she proceeded to go home.
Later that evening, Kat sat on the couch with Max alongside the tension that joined them. They were actually watching a movie together but her mind was elsewhere — kissing Morgan. Max laughed at a joke from the movie but Kat wasn't even paying attention.
"You okay?" Max glanced over to her. "You've been quiet tonight".
Kat forced out a smile, "Yup".
Max reached for her hand, his touch held such heavy unsettling pressure and unspoken words. "You can talk to me about anything. You know I'm here for you?".
His sincerity tugged at her heart, "I know Max. I appreciate it".
It was just then that her phone buzzed, indicating a text from Morgan.
Morgan: how about we meet at a new bar tmrw evening?
Kat's heart raced at the words on the screen as she felt excitement and dread. She looked at Max, who was engrossed in the movie. What would he say if he knew?
"Kat?" he questioned bringing her back to reality. "You here?".
"Yeah! Sorry, just got a text" she said trying to keep her voice normal.
"From who?" he asked with curiosity.
"A friend" she replied avoiding his gaze. The lie felt heavy on her tongue but she couldn't bring herself to say the truth.
"Gotcha... you know I trust you, right?" he said nodding with a hint of concern in his voice.
Kat just nodded in response as her stomach twisted. The rest of the evening went by as a blur of forced laughter with a coat of guilt glazed on top. As Max pulled her in for a goodnight kiss, Kat felt the familiar affection with a heavy pang of bitter deception. She knew she had to navigate the way she felt soon.
