Kat's heart thudded in her chest as she slipped her shoes off. Walking down the hallway, she saw Max sitting in the living room playing video games.

"Hey how was your night?" he asked looking up quickly.

Kat swallowed hard, her throat dry. She stood in the entrance of the living room frozen and unable to find the words. She couldn't keep lying, she was about to break.

But she found the words. "It was fine" her voice came out more croaked than intended.

"Are you sure?".

Kat sat down on the edge of the couch. The tension was an invisible wall between the both of them, and the both of them knew it at this point. Her heart screamed at her to come clean and to confess and deal with the consequences of her own actions. What would he do? Who would leave the apartment? Would he want to fight for the relationship? Would she want to fight for the relationship?

She glanced at Max, "It's been a tiring night. I'm going to bed".

He just nodded not entirely convinced but concerned. He took a moment to study her facial features, "Ok".

Walking in and changing into pajamas, she knew what had to be done. It was either now or never. Her unforgivable sin.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket but she ignored it as she walked back into the living room. Max looked up with a smile on his face that was wiped off his face as soon as he saw her expression.

Kat took a deep breath, "I need to talk to you Max". Her voice began to tremble but she didn't even know where to start as her voice wavered.

Max stiffened as his face darkened "What are you talking about? What's going on?".

Kat's stomach twisted as she began to speak. "Something happened when I was out".

Max's eyes narrowed as suspicion and hurt flashed across his face. "What do you mean 'something happened' Kat?".

"I kissed someone. It was an accident but-"

Max shot up off the couch making Kat take a step backward. "Are you fucking serious? You kissed someone?!".

Kat flinched at this sudden outburst as her guilt intensified and her speech became jumbled together. "Max, it just happened. I didn't plan-".

"You didn't plan for it?" Max scoffed. His tone dripped of sarcasm and hurt, "You've been sneaking around with him haven't you?".

"No it's not like that. We hung out one time but then after" but Max wasn't listening. He had every right to be angry and his emotions were boiling over.

"How long Kat? With who?" he demanded as the trust unraveled.

"Two days. I have been confused but I never meant to hurt you. I wanted to find out for myself-" she began to cry out.

"You didn't mean to hurt me?" Max's voice cracked. "Kat, I've been nothing but loyal the last three years. Fuck. We even live together. You cheated on me? How did you not mean to hurt me? If you were confused you should have came to me".

The room fell silent minus the TV softly playing in the background. The harsh reality was hitting her as his words sank in. She didn't know what to say. She didn't even know if she wanted to fix anything. Maybe the girls were right. She had fallen out of love for him.

"Is there something between you both? Do you have feelings for him?" Max asked softly, his voice wavering.

Kat hesitated, her heart sunk into her chest. She could see the pain in his eyes, she could tell the answer he was looking for. But the truth was, she couldn't give him the answer she was looking for. She wasn't quite sure just yet of how she felt but she knew she had built a connection with Morgan.

"I don't know. I need time," Kat admitted in a soft tone.

Max's expression hardened again at her response. "You don't know?! I can't believe you".

"I'm sorry Max. I never wanted to hurt you" Kat whispered, her voice cracking slightly.

Max stood in silence as he processed everything. "I don't have any words. I thought I could trust you. I thought that I was enough".

Kat stayed silent as she listened to him speak and processed everything. "I need to get out of here and leave" he said as he walked into the bedroom and began grabbing things.

Watching Max in silence, it took him a minute before he grabbed his keys and didn't look back. Most of his stuff still remained in the apartment but she couldn't even manage to get a tear out. She was mentally not in the relationship at all anymore... and now physically too.

The sound of the door slamming echoed and left her alone with the sound of her howling thoughts. The deafening silence followed and for the first time, she sat alone on the couch and cried. What had she done? Was this the right choice?

Hours passed and Kat hadn't moved. She was frozen in time and physically contemplating her confession. Her phone buzzing broke her out of her trance, and she saw Morgan's name pop up on the screen. She was numb.

Morgan: hey stranger, how are you doing?

Kat stared at the message and felt nothing except emptiness. She just broke someone's heart after three years. But she wasn't sad. Just emotionless. But finally, she gained the strength to text him back. She needed someone. Staring at a home with no one inside of it was heartbreaking.

Kat: I told Max

There was a brief moment of Morgan typing until his name flashed across the screen. Kat stared at the name for a moment before picking up.

"How did it go?" Morgan asked.

Kat sighed, her emotions still burning. "Not good, he left".

There was a slight pause and Kat checked to see if the phone disconnected. "Do you want to talk about it?" Morgan's voice sounded through the line.

As much as she was drawn to Morgan, she knew talking to him would complicate things. But she also didn't want to be alone in her apartment.

"I don't know" Kat shrugged.

"Take your time. I'm here for you" Morgan assured her before hanging up.

After sitting in silence for what felt like hours after Max had left, her phone broke her out of her trance. She had no idea where Max had gone, or if he would ever be back. His location was off and she knew better than to reach out to him. Checking her phone, she read her messages.

Hailey: hey girl... haven't heard from you in a minute. you ok?

Amara: you've been MIA miss. where r u??

Morgan: are you ok? do you need me?

Did she need him? The phrasing of the question lingered in her mind. She had hurt Max beyond repair and now was walking a thin line of causing more irreversible damage. The apartment walls were suffocating her with the guilt and shame from her actions.

Without much thought, she texted Morgan back.

Kat: can i come over?

In an instant, Morgan replied with his address.

Grabbing her keys and putting on her shoes, Kat began her journey to Morgan's. After all, what more damage could she do?
