Warning: War Crimes and Suicide

Republic of Altarus, Le Brias, April 22nd 1641

Le Brias, once a shining beauty of a city to the eastern world, was given a worse treatment than Berlin in the bombing runs of world war 2. It resembled the bombing of cities only seen in nightmares. Food, water, basic needs were but a dream.

Over 350 000 Had died from the bombing raids, an additional 200 000 died from the lack of everything. Many more fled for the countryside. Most of the dead from the Bombing raids came from the intensity of the Flames engulfing the city every day.

Only 220 000 Remained, alongside what remained of the Military, 27 Fighters, 250 000 Soldiers and 11 ships. However, this force was in a single city, under siege and facing an enemy which was butchering their way across the island.

Most soldiers, barely over 22 years old, were tired, demoralized and most important of all, scared.

They saw first hand the brutality of the Byzantines, how stories of entire units which laid down arms were shot. While It was true that the Byzantines were brutal, the propaganda both sides painted made them much worse.

As the soldiers of the once proud Republican Army marched by the presidential palace, they saw the burning embers still, the president was long dead, there was no effective government except the mayor of the city, a 63 year old Named Charles Riva.

He was the 11th mayor in 2 weeks as the others kept killing themselves or fleeing the city.

The situation was beyond hopeless. But they had no choice but to fight on, The Papaldians promised to send 10 000 Fresh Men and Promised to help send as many of them to Papaldia as possible.

But the Altarisians refused their help. It was a doomed mission for both sides regardless.

In the seas, Submarines from the Byzantines, which took to sinking every ship they found, regardless if the enemy was civilian or not, meant they would never be able to reach Le Brias.

The city and the country was left to its fate.

As the soldiers got into defensive positions, they saw a massive pile of bodies, dead from the raids. Burned and Starving, it was a pitiful sight for everyone to see. Their Officer put down his backpack and took out the shovel.

"Dig defenses here, they will either be the fortress history will remember you for or the graves of our defeat" The Officer spoke.

All the soldiers quickly got to work, they came under fire as Missiles and shells began to fall onto the city. Mainly near the docks as the Byzantines were waiting.

For them, the Byzantines had pushed too far into Altarus, By Now 410 000 were in Altarus, including the Navy, Air Force, Excubitor Guards and more.

But of the 410 000 Which occupied and were to occupy 'Nova Hispania', Over 320 000 were in garrisons across the country, brutally suppressing partisans.

The 90 000 Byzantines which can fight and besiege Le Brias, Were of the lower quality, which meant their commanders, scared of both failure and the empress, took to lies to make it seem the city was falling shortly.

But things needed to change, Enter General Konstantine Vosilov, A 44 Year man who was an expert in siege warfare. He was flown from the labor camps in Syria, Having previously been placed there for his Liberal Views of having an Enlightened Absolute Monarchy.

After being tortured for 11 years, he was finally freed. Now he was weakened, tired and dying. He would die in 1648 from his wounds caused by his torture.
