Avery's POV
"My mind was still reeling from this morning's events. I couldn't believe I'd just been promoted to head of the legal services department, especially considering I'd only been working here for a week."
"I couldn't shake off the feeling of being watched. People's intense stares made my skin prickle, and the whispers of a few girls stung.
Why had the CEO chosen me, a newcomer, for this prestigious role? Self-doubt crept in.
As I headed to the printer, Linder accidentally bumped into me. "Watch it!" I said with a laugh.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Miss Avery! Please don't report me to the CEO," Linder teased, her eyes sparkling.
"Stop that, Linder. We're friends. Drop the formalities," I replied, warmth spreading through me.
We chatted for a bit before returning to work. My team members were ecstatic about Jeff's departure. His toxic behavior had drained them.
Later, in the restroom, I overheard two girls gossiping.
"I don't get how she landed that position," one said, venom in her voice. "She's only been here a week, and now she's running the show. What's next?"
"I bet she slept with the CEO," the other girl chimed in, her tone dripping with malice.
A surge of anger and disgust washed over me. I burst into the conversation, making them jump.
"Instead of spreading misinformation and wasting time, maybe you should focus on your work," I suggested, washing my hands at the sink.
My voice trembled with emotion. "And for the record, I earned my position through merit, not by offering favors to the CEO.
Perhaps your years of service haven't yielded the same results as my one week here."
I walked past them, head held high, confidence and pride fueling my stride.
The rest of the day flew by in a whirlwind of emotions. Linder interrupted my flow to remind me it was closing time.
As it was Friday, my team had planned a celebratory dinner at a nearby restaurant. We feasted, laughed, and basking in the joy of my new position.
Tears of gratitude pricked at the corners of my eyes. We completely lost track of time.
