I wasn't just a madman with no reason. The events of my youth shaped the way I see the world today. Two failed marriages and countless years spent in combat had forged me into who I am..

I wasn't broken, but I was undoubtedly scarred.

I rose from the bed and immediately glanced out the window, eyes scanning the storm brewing outside. I'd been through enough of them to know exactly what to expect.

While others may pack up and leave, that's never been my style. We stay put, ready for whatever nature throws at us.

Having lived through hurricanes, including Katrina, I knew the drill. Vigilance was key.

I paused for a moment, debating whether I should check on Nicole or leave her to her own devices.

Our history wasn't exactly warm. I had my reasons for resenting her, and the thought of being stuck in this situation together wasn't something I relished.

A gentle knock on my bedroom door jolted me out of my thoughts. I  slowly made my way towards the door.

There, standing in the doorway, was Nicole, sporting one of my oversized Marine t-shirts and a pair of shorts I had given her.

Despite the clothes being far too big for her petite frame.

"Good morning," she said, offering a plate of food. "I hope I didn't wake you."

I looked her over, skepticism in my gaze. For a moment, I wondered whether I should take the food or just send her away.

Had she changed, or was this just another game?

I took the plate from her, eyeing the food cautiously. It looked fine... normal.

"Do you think I would hurt you?" she asked her tone a combination of annoyance and doubt.

"Can't be too careful," I replied, setting the plate down beside me. She took a seat across from me on the edge of the bed.

She looked at me, her eyes wide and innocent. However, there was a hardness in her now, a side I hadn't seen before, especially considering everything that had transpired.
