Meet up at the lake somewhere in the backwoods
FlashbackNicole hunter
The excitement bubbled over as we exited the car and made our way towards the party at the lake. As the sun set, casting a warm golden glow over the water. The sounds of laughter and music filled the air and I couldn't help but feel excited and nervous at the same time.
Mia gave me a knowing look and nudged me with her elbow. "Girl, trust me, guys can be so clueless sometimes. If Terry didn't like you, he wouldn't have kissed you back. I mean, come on, it's not rocket science!"
Caught sight of Terry across the lawn, talking and laughing with his friends. My heart skipped a beat and I quickly looked away, pretending to be interested in the decorations around me. Mia gave me a knowing smile and squeezed my hand
"Let's go grab some drinks!" Mia exclaimed excitedly above the music. I stuck closely by her side as we headed toward the cooler box.
Scanning the area, I noticed a few teenagers from our neighborhood. After getting our drinks, we headed towards the lake where most of our friends were gathered. "Hey guys!" Mia and I chimed in together as we approached.
As the night progressed, I made it a point to seek out Terry, wanting to have a conversation with him about what happened at his house the other day.
With the tension between us already present, maybe it would be better to keep my thoughts to myself.
I found myself unable to articulate my innermost feelings.Opting instead to savor a slow, deep sip of my beverage, I yearned for the electrifying sensation as it cascaded down my throat.
Lost in the rhythm of the music, I resigned myself to the uncertainty "He's totally checking you out," Mia whispered excitedly, swinging to the music.
With a sense of apprehension creeping over me, I nodded and tried my best to act normal, following her lead as she danced in front of me.
Taking a breath I excuse myself from Mia and a couple of our friends. Feeling the need for a break, I decided to wander around the lake for a while.
Well, look who decided to grace me with their presence on this lovely night," I remarked, feigning surprise at Terry's sudden appearance.
"Please, tell me you're not here to disturb my peace." I pleaded with him jokingly.
"Nah, I just noticed you were by yourself, so I thought I'd come over." Terry laughed lightly, indicating that he just wanted to stay with me for a bit before he left...
As we walked along the path, the setting moon cast a warm glow on the water. While Terry elaborated on his choice to enlist in the Marines. Since we were done with high school.
Listening and nodding along as he recounted his decision. It was refreshing to see Terry so enthusiastic and passionate about something, especially after all the stress of high school.
At that moment, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy, wishing I had taken more time to discuss what I wanted out of life... I didn't really take the time to ponder on what truly mattered to me.
I found myself caught up in fulfilling the expectations placed upon me, mainly assisting my father with the responsibilities of the church.
As the Stars began to twinkle above us, I realized that it wasn't too late to start. Maybe, just maybe, Terry's contagious enthusiasm could inspire me to step out of my comfort zone and explore the world around me. as we continued our walk.
He'll be leaving to serve our country. And I will be staying in town to assist my father with managing his church. It didn't feel appropriate to bring up the kiss we shared the other day. That had my head spinning... My thoughts were all over the place.
I couldn't help but feel anxious and apprehensive. I wasn't certain how he would react about the kiss situation.
His thoughts remained a mystery to me, yet it felt as though he had the ability to gaze deep into my very being, uncovering layers of my essence as though I were made of glass.
His piercing ocean-blue eyes seemed to hold a power that transcended mere sight, reaching into the depths of my soul with an intensity that left me breathless.
Terry seemed uncertain as he scratched the back of his neck, confessing, "About the other day, I can't say for certain, to be completely honest." Terry's words made a strong impact, like a crashing wave.
My heart ached, and my breath seemed to catch in my throat as I processed his confession.
Terry reached out and placed a hand on mine, his touch gentle yet laden with unspoken sorrow. "I just don't want to complicate things," he said softly as if trying to reassure me even as his own heart seemed heavy with doubt.
Nodded slowly, understanding the weight of his decision even as it tore at my own heart. The future suddenly seemed uncertain, the path ahead filled with obstacles and unknowns.
It's truly unbelievable how naive I was, to imagine that there could be anything significant between us. Understanding that neither of us could tolerate one another. The truth struck me like a heavyweight.
"I think it might be a good idea to start making our way back," I expressed, a sense of melancholy descending upon me.
As we approached our friends, Terry chuckled and jokingly reminded me to keep in touch. I nodded, feeling a twinge of sadness as the night drew to an end.
"Sure, I'll write you I guess," I said with a weak smile.
He simply nodded in agreement, and we walked back together in silence, each lost in our own thoughts.
