The drive back home was so long, I barely noticed the Louisiana welcome sign.

"We're home!" Jacob announced as we passed it. I glanced out the car window, heart racing. There it was—the familiar landscape of my childhood, hills and old trees standing sentinel over memories etched in sun and shadows.

It had been over a year since we both had been back, and I was missing home like crazy. When we first left, I was just his girlfriend, but now, with the ring on my finger shimmering against the sunlight, I marveled at how things had changed.

The ring was the most beautiful thing I had ever laid eyes on; a delicate twist of gold cradling a sparkling diamond that caught the light with every movement of my hand.

"Ayy," I smiled, catching Jacob's gaze momentarily. He turned his head away from the road, a grin splitting his face, and leaned over to kiss my cheek softly. My heart fluttered at the gesture, a small sweetness amidst the anticipation bubbling inside me.

I could hardly wait to see my father again and to tell him all about the engagement he had secretly planned with Jacob.

"Hey, do you mind if we stop by Tone's?" Jacob asked, his tone casual yet hopeful.

"Yeah, sure," I replied, my excitement revealed in my voice. I watched as we drove by my old high school, memories flooding in like a summer storm.

So much had changed—the little shops I used to visit replaced by new homes and a small mall that popped up where a bakery used to stand. Nostalgia wrapped around me, warm and bittersweet, as we neared our destination.

As we pulled into Tone's parking lot, the familiar façade of the restaurant stirred up memories of laughter shared over plates of steaming gumbo and spicy jambalaya. Jacob opened my door, and I took his hand, squeezing it gently as we walked toward the entrance, a delightful thrill coursing through me.

Inside, the air was thick with the aroma of sizzling food and a chorus of cheerful chatter.

Familiar faces flashed smiles and waves as we navigated through the crowd, our laughter intertwining with their greetings. Finally, we made our way to the back, where Tyler sat at his desk, engrossed in some paperwork.

"Oh shit, look who the cat dragged in!" Tyler exclaimed, jumping up as soon as he spotted us. "Come here!" He enveloped us both in a bear hug that felt like coming home.

"I missed the two of you!" he said, stepping back to look at us, his eyes dancing with warmth.

"Yeah, it's been a long time coming." Jacob chuckled, nudging me playfully as we settled into chairs.

"So, what have the two of you been up to?" Tyler asked, curiosity sparkling in his blue eyes as he perched back in his seat.

"Well, we've been planning a..." I paused, excitement bubbling inside me, and thrust my hand forward. "A wedding!" I squealed, jumping up and down like a kid unwrapping a long-awaited gift.

"What?!" Tyler's mouth fell open in disbelief as he stood up, taking my hand into his, gazing in reverence at the ring resting there. "This is stunning! Congratulations!"

His enthusiasm fueled my own. "Jacob surprised me! I can't believe we're actually getting married!" My heart raced as I spoke, the overwhelming joy of love and support swelling around us.

As Tyler continued to admire the ring, he joked, "So, when's the big day? Do I get to be your best man?"

Jacob laughed, teasingly ruffling Tyler's hair. "Only if you promise to wear a tuxedo and not jeans!"
