Nicole Hunter

My Tennessee home, surrounded by the silence of a big house, I couldn't help but feel a sense of loneliness. It had been 5 months since Jacob and I moved here, and his new position had taken a toll on our relationship.

He was always busy, leaving me to my own devices, and I found myself stuck in a boring habit.

Every day was the same: cleaning, making coffee, and waiting for Jacob to come home.

I had tried to fill the void by taking care of our new kitten, Tiana, Naming her after my favorite Disney princess, because of her stunning green eyes. Even her companionship couldn't shake off the feeling of emptiness.

I had thought that maybe having a baby would excite my life, but that was out of the question. My father would never approve of me having a child out of wedlock.

As I worked in the garden, planting the last of my Crape Myrtle, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The earthy scent of the soil and the gentle brush of Tiana's fur against my leg was a welcome distraction from my thoughts. But even as I found solace in the simple task, my mind wandered back to the emptiness I felt.

I would even pick fights with Jacob just to get some attention from him, but he would never raise his voice or argue back. It was as if he was too tired or too busy to care. I felt like I was just going through the motions of our relationship, without any real connection or passion.

Ever since that day Terry called me, it's like old feelings came like waves crashing... But here I was, with a man who loved me. Jacob was everything I thought I wanted. I needed him he wasn't tied to my past. Deep down, my whole existence felt like a puzzle I couldn't solve.

In the aftermath of that day, it seemed as though Nicole had delivered a devastating blow to my heart. Perhaps it was best to release her from my grip, despite my desire for some form of resolution or clarity from her - a desire that may remain unfulfilled.

Packing the last of my belongings filled me with joy, knowing I would soon be heading home. It had been three years since I last saw my parents, and phone calls and video cam just weren't the same.

I missed everything about my home. While my time in the Navy allowed me to explore and learn from different cultures, nothing compared to the feeling of being back home.

Boot camp was tough, teaching me to respect authority. But after completing it, things began to fall into place.

Climbing the ranks, I had now achieved the title of Petty Officer Second Class and had my eyes set on becoming a Gunnery Sergeant. Despite the challenges and fatigue, I knew that putting in a few more years of hard work would be worth it in the end.
