wish that I could mend you, babe..But I'd be putting you together while I'm falling apartNicole hunter
The red numbers on the dashboard glared at me—5:50 a.m.
The car sped down the empty road, my pulse racing just as fast. The world outside was a blur, streetlights streaking past like ghosts.
Terry was going to be furious. Two days. It had been two whole days since I left—since I ignored every one of his calls, every single text.
I hadn't planned on coming back. Not like this. Not after drowning myself in cheap liquor and whatever drugs I could get my hands on at that rundown motel.
I just wanted the pain to stop. I just wanted to feel nothing.
The car screeched to a stop in the driveway.
My hands fumbled with the keys as I staggered up the porch steps, my body sluggish, my mind clouded.
The keys slipped from my grasp, clattering against the wooden floorboards.
I barely had time to bend down before the door swung open.
Terry stood there, arms crossed, his face set in a look that made my stomach twist. Anger simmered behind his eyes, but worse than that—disappointment.
I swayed slightly and forced a grin, my voice slurred. "Heyy."
He didn't say a word. Just shook his head in disbelief.
Without breaking eye contact, he stepped aside, letting me stumble past him into the house. The door clicked shut behind me, the sound heavier than it should have been.
"Where the hell have you been?"His voice wasn't loud, but it hit like a punch to the gut.
I reached out to steady myself against the wall, my vision swimming. The room felt like it was tilting, like the floor might give out beneath me at any second.
Terry didn't wait for an answer. He grabbed my arm, his grip firm. "Are you drunk?"
I let out a breathless laugh. "Haha, maybe."The giggle that escaped me was anything but funny. It sounded hollow, forced—like I was trying to convince myself this wasn't as bad as it was.
Before I could react, Terry scooped me up effortlessly. I didn't fight back. Didn't have the strength.
He carried me to the couch, holding me tighter than I deserved, like he was afraid I might slip through his fingers. And maybe, deep down, he knew I already had.
How could you give the kinda love I need with your broken heart?
"What the fuck?" Terry's voice cut through the air, sharp and loud enough to make my ears ring.
"don't yell at me!" I shot back, wincing as the weight of his disappointment settled between us like a storm cloud.
Why did he care so much? Why was he always trying to fix me? My own frustration bubbled over, spilling out in a voice that was just as loud as his.
