The Donbas is the eastern sectors of Ukraine that have been under severe pressure from separatist and civil unrest across the whole country because of cultural and political differences to eachother and the two provinces of Ukraine were Donetsk and Luhansk which contained both major cities and industrial bases for producing items in Eastern Europe. And that caught the attention of one big player. Russia.
The people of Donetsk and Luhansk were primarily not Ukrainian people and many of them were either discontent with Ukrainian governance. Or they were separatists of Russian descent and culture which they wanted to break away from Ukraine however. The Ukrainian government cannot afford to lose such an important industrial base. As it will result in economic decline and huge weakening in the economy. And since the Donetsk and Luhansk people couldn't break away peacefully, they decided to leave Ukraine violently. In March 2014 the Seperatists of Donetsk and Luhansk declared their independence and violence against Ukrainiun citizens into the dust. Following their self declared independence, Ukrainian military officials began mobilisation of the army as the Donbas rebels setup their own rebel militants to fight back. And fighting began between the two forces. After an intense few months of fighting and violence, the Ukrainian forces had recaptured significant territories that were lost to the rebels. But it didnt mean that the separatist war was costly. At least 10,000 Troops had been killed and another 15,000 injured or wounded significantly. Same for the Donbas militants and rebels. However when the world least expected it, Russia began to supply the militants with weapons and supplies to fight back and it was successful in such case. The Ukrainian forces were forced to retreat and go behind the province borders. Which meant that the Ukrainians had lost all their progress to reclaiming their stolen lands.
And then as the whole world watched further, they saw that Russia was preparing a force to invade Ukraine however the troops were stationed on the Crimean peninsula and the peninsula had the major warm water port of Sevastopol. Which had massive access to the black sea. And they began to move into Crimea as the whole United nations security council went into a frenzy seeing the 2nd most powerful military in the world invading a country of instability and conflict. The Donbas rebels continued to fight and cause trouble with the Ukrainian government. And as the forces in Crimea stationed fought Russian troops they didnt put up much resistance. And by August 2014, Russia had fully captured Crimea and had illegally annexed the region without UN actions. And they also continued to support the Donbas rebels and militants with weapons and funding for weapon purchases. And till this day, this is believed to be the true start to the Russo-Ukraine war. The roots of the conflict since day 1 to the present day.
