𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐘𝐄𝐓 another one of those useless days at Liberty High School – the annual college tour for the senior class.

Sure, it was necessary for some people, but not for Nessa. She knew exactly where she wanted to go, and despite everything that had happened to her in high school, she had a pretty good chance of opening an acceptance letter from Columbia University in a few months.

Besides, traumatic incidents make for great college essays.

"I just don't think you should skip the tour." Justin told Clay pointedly as the two of them walked down the sidewalks of Liberty, Scott and Nessa beside them with their hands entangled. "It's mandatory."

"Since when does the word 'mandatory' mean anything to you?" Clay asked dryly, and both Nessa and Scott let out a chuckle. Justin too.

"He got you there, Foley." Nessa joked with her best friend. Clay made a point. Justin couldn't give a rats ass about "mandatory" most days.

"My dad's been teaching at Sanderson since I was eight." Clay continued. "I know the campus."

"But this is about going to school there." Justin replied as the four students continued along the sidewalks. "Maybe you might do that."

"No." Clay shot him down immediately. "That would make my dad too happy. And it's too close to home. I need to get out of this town."

"Heard that." Nessa agreed with Clay. She was dying to get out of this town. It couldn't come soon enough for her.

Scott looked up at her, a look on his face. "I'm in this town." he said dryly, and Nessa lightly hit him on the shoulder with her free hand.

"You're coming with me." Nessa told him with a smile on her face. "That's the deal."

"If the scouts agree, then yes." Scott told her, and Nessa realized once again that she didn't have much of a say on if he came with her or not. It was all up to his talents, and the scouts for college baseball. Nessa prayed every night that the college baseball Gods would be on her side when the time came.

"Anyways, why would you look at Sanderson when you have Occidental?" Clay asked Justin, ignoring the annoying display of love beside him.

"Doesn't kill to have options, Clay." Nessa told him, and Justin nodded in agreement.

"Correct, Nessa." he stated. "And I'm not in yet. Plus, I like the idea of Sanderson being so close to home."

"Coming from the guy that not only hates this town, but once told me that college is for people that couldn't get a job?" Nessa teased Justin, who chuckled once again.

"You said that?" Scott piped up, a hint of laughter in his voice. "Crazy take."

"I didn't think I was good enough, especially when I'm talking to Columbia over here." Justin explained himself, cocking his head in Nessa's direction. "I didn't think I deserved a future before."
