𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘, 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐀𝐈𝐑 seemed lighter, the sky seemed brighter, and for once, it seemed like everything was going to be alright in Nessa's life, because, this morning – she got the email that she had been dreaming about since she was five years old and talking to her dad about college.

Nessa Dempsey had been accepted into Columbia University.

It took about one minute for the fact to register in her brain, and about one more minute for her to scream at the top of her lungs as she held her laptop in her hands. One more minute, and Zach Dempsey was at his sister's bedroom door with his old baseball bat, thinking that there was an intruder in the house.

"Put the fucking bat down and give me a hug, Zachary!" Nessa exclaimed through her own excitement, and Zach wasted no time picking his sister up like she was just a kid again, spinning her around.

"I'm so fucking proud of you, Ness." Zach said genuinely as the two sat on her bed, staring at the acceptance email from Columbia.

"I need to call Scott." Nessa said, and Zach nodded as he left the room, giving his twin one more hug and fluffing her hair with his hand.

Nessa was so excited that she could barely stop her hands from shaking enough to dial her boyfriend's number, and she wasted no time as soon as he picked up to share her news. It was safe to say that her boyfriend was almost as excited as her, because he knew just how much this meant to her – everyone did.

"I actually have something I'm hoping I can tell you, too." Scott told her once Nessa was finished reveling in her own glory. Nessa perked up, hoping that it was going to be good news – that he was offered a scholarship to a school near her.

Scott had received some pretty intriguing offers in the past few months, and it was down to the wire to sign off on one. Nessa was hoping for a decision soon, so that the two of them could try to figure out what was in store for them next.

"I really hope it's good news." Nessa said, and Scott laughed on the other end.

"I'd like to tell you in person, if that's okay?" Scott asked, and Nessa of course, obliged, before she had to hang up the phone and get ready for school today.

Nessa was beside herself with pride and joy, because she knew that she deserved this. Everything that she had been faced with, everything that life had thrown at her in the last two years – suddenly, it all felt worthwhile.

However, Nessa's joy was short-lived once her phone rang with a call from Jessica. Nessa answered excitedly, ready to share her joy with her best friend, but that idea was soon shot down when Jessica had tearfully told her that she didn't get accepted into any of her top three colleges, Columbia included.

Nessa felt awful for Jess, truly, because none of this was her fault, but rather the consequence of extremely shitty timing. She took her first SAT two days after Bryce got probation for sexually assaulting the two girls, and the second time a week after he died. Nessa, on the other hand, had elected to do hers before things started falling apart around her, which proved to work extremely well in her favor.
