The chamber pulsed with the strange, malevolent energy of the orb. Liv could feel it vibrating in the air, crawling under her skin like an Itch she couldn't scratch. Her hand instinctively reached for her hand cannon, but she hesitated, unsure if any weapon she had could stop whatever this was.
Cayde stood next to her, his gunslinger stance low and ready, his sharp eyes never leaving the orb. Faelyn, the ever-calm Warlock, had his arms outstretched, channeling his Light in case the Darkness lashed out again. But something about this place felt off—like the rules of Light and Darkness were shifting.
"Alright, Faelyn," Cayde said, breaking the tension with his usual nonchalance. "Any brilliant Warlock insight into this creepy ball of doom?"
Faelyn frowned, his brow furrowing in concentration. "This is... different. It's not Hive magic, at least not entirely. This... this is the Darkness itself."
Liv's stomach churned. She had been playing this game, living in this game, for days now. She knew what was coming. The Darkness was here, and it was coming for them all. But why now? Why here?
The voice from the orb echoed again, deep and chilling. "You cannot escape your fate..."
Cayde gripped his gun tighter. "Okay, that's not unsettling at all."
Liv took a step forward, her heart pounding. She knew she should be terrified, but there was a part of her—a part connected to the Light—that pulsed in response to the Darkness, like two opposing forces drawn to one another.
"We need to destroy it," she said, her voice stronger than she expected. "We can't let this... thing stay here."
Cayde glanced at her, his usual cocky grin replaced by a more serious expression. "Kid's got guts. Alright, let's light this thing up."
As soon as Cayde fired his first shot at the orb, the chamber erupted into chaos. The Darkness retaliated, unleashing waves of Hive that seemed to crawl out of the walls themselves, their eyes glowing with a sinister red light.
Liv barely had time to react as a Thrall lunged at her. She sidestepped and fired, the creature disintegrating into ash before it could reach her. But the onslaught didn't stop—more and more Hive poured in from every direction, faster and stronger than she remembered.
Her Ghost's voice crackled in her ear. "Liv, there's too many! We need to fall back!"
But Liv wasn't listening. Her focus was on the orb, pulsing in the center of the room, taunting her with its dark energy. She knew that if they didn't destroy it, things would only get worse.
Cayde was a blur of motion, his Golden Gun flashing as he took down enemy after enemy. Faelyn unleashed a storm of Arc energy, his fingers crackling with power as he sent bolts of lightning crashing into the Hive. But even with their combined strength, the tide seemed endless. Liv felt the Light building inside her, more powerful than before. It was as if the Darkness was drawing it out, forcing her to confront her abilities head-on. She closed her eyes, focusing on that inner well of power, and suddenly, the Light surged through her.
Her body moved on Instinct, her hands glowing with Arc energy. She leapt into the air, slamming down with all her strength, sending a wave of energy rippling outward. The ground shook, and Hive disintegrated in waves, but still the Darkness persisted.
"We need to focus on the orb!" Faelyn shouted, his voice strained as he held back another wave of Thrall.
Liv's eyes locked onto the orb, pulsing with malevolent energy. She knew this was the source, the thing feeding the Hive. It was more than just a simple enemy—it was a piece of the Darkness itself, here to consume them all.
