The warmth of the night under the Traveler lingered in Liv's memory as the days passed. That quiet moment with Cayde had been unlike anything she had experienced since arriving in this universe. For the first time, she felt grounded in this world, tethered not just by her mission, but by someone who made her feel like she belonged.

But their time of peace was short-lived.

Back in the Tower, the Vanguard had reconvened. The time had come to face the next challenge-Mercury, the Vex stronghold, where time itself bent to their will. Liv, Cayde, Faelyn, and the rest of the fireteam gathered in the command room, standing before Ikora and Zavala.

"The Vex on Mercury are different," Ikora explained, her voice steady. "Their experiments with time have grown more erratic, and their stronghold, the Infinite Forest, remains impenetrable. If we want answers-about time, the future, and possibly how to change it-Mercury is our best hope."

Zavala, arms crossed and expression stern, nodded in agreement. "But it won't be easy. The Infinite Forest is a labyrinth of possibilities, simulations that can trap even the strongest Guardians. If the Darkness has any influence there, you must be prepared for anything."

Liv's heart raced as she listened. This mission could be the key to everything-the key to stopping Cayde's death. But it also carried more uncertainty than any of their previous missions. The Vex manipulated time like it was a toy, and she knew firsthand how dangerous that could be.

Cayde stood beside her, his usual cocky demeanor in place, though Liv noticed the subtle way his fingers tapped against his side-nervous energy he was trying to hide. He caught her looking and gave her a small, reassuring smile.

"Don't worry, Liv. We've got this."

She smiled back, though her nerves weren't so easily quelled. "I know. But this... feels bigger than anything we've done so far."

Ikora's voice cut through their exchange. "You'll leave at dawn. Prepare yourselves, and make sure you're ready for what awaits."

That night, the Tower was quieter than usual. Most of the Guardians were resting or preparing for their next missions. Liv found herself in the hangar, standing by her ship and gazing up at the stars. She could feel the weight of the mission bearing down on her, the uncertainty gnawing at her insides.

Footsteps approached, and she didn't need to look to know it was Cayde.

"You're not getting cold feet, are you?" he teased, his voice light but with an undercurrent of seriousness.

Liv shook her head, turning to face him. "No, just... thinking. About what's ahead. About what happens if we don't succeed."

Cayde moved closer, his expression softening. "Hey, I get it. This whole thing is a lot to take in. But you've got to remember, we've already changed things. You being here? That's proof enough that the future isn't set in stone."

Liv sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I know. It's just... the Vex. They play with time like it's nothing. What if-"

"What if nothing," Cayde interrupted gently, stepping even closer. "We'll figure it out. You and me, together. And besides..." He flashed her a grin. "We're Guardians. We don't do 'what ifs.' We do 'get it done.'"

His confidence was contagious, and Liv found herself smiling despite her worries. Cayde had a way of making the impossible seem possible, even when everything felt like it was spiraling out of control.

"You're right," she said, her voice steadier. "We'll figure it out."

Cayde's grin softened into something more genuine as he took her hand, his touch warm and reassuring. "I'm glad you're with me on this, Liv. Really."

Liv felt her heart skip a beat at the tenderness in his voice. Their connection had deepened so much since they first met, and now, standing here with him, she realized just how much she had come to care about him-about saving him, yes, but also just about being by his side.

"Me too," she whispered, her hand squeezing his.

They stood in silence for a moment, the weight of their unspoken feelings hanging between them. The stars above seemed to shimmer a little brighter, and for a brief moment, the looming mission and the dangers ahead felt distant.

Cayde's voice broke the quiet, low and almost hesitant. "You know, after all this is over... maybe we could, uh, do this again. A night out. You know, without the whole 'saving the universe' part."

Liv smiled, warmth blooming in her chest. "I'd like that."

He laughed softly, the sound full of affection. "Yeah, me too."

At dawn, they were ready.

The fireteam boarded their ships, and Liv found herself sitting in the cockpit, staring out at the vastness of space as the engines hummed to life. Cayde's voice came through her comms, full of his usual charm but tinged with the gravity of the mission ahead.

"Alright, Guardians. Let's go mess with some time."

The jump to Mercury was brief, and soon they were descending onto the planet's surface. The bright sun overhead cast a harsh, golden light across the desolate landscape, and in the distance, Liv could see the looming entrance to the Infinite Forest-a labyrinth of time and simulations, controlled by the Vex.

The fireteam disembarked, and Faelyn stepped up beside Liv, his bow slung over his shoulder. "This place feels... wrong."

Liv nodded, her instincts prickling. "It's the Vex. They manipulate time here. Everything feels off because nothing is what it seems."

Cayde moved ahead, drawing his hand cannon. "Well, we've handled worse. Let's see what they've got waiting for us."

They made their way toward the entrance, but as they approached, the air around them seemed to ripple, distorting like a mirage. Liv's pulse quickened as she felt time itself warp, the familiar linear flow shifting into something more chaotic.

"This is it," Faelyn muttered, readying his weapon.

The entrance to the Infinite Forest loomed before them, dark and foreboding, and Liv could feel the pull of the Vex's influence-time bending and twisting around them, drawing them into its labyrinth.

Cayde glanced back at Liv, his eyes steady but full of unspoken concern. "You ready for this?"

Liv nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "As ready as I'll ever be."

With one final look at each other, they stepped into the Infinite Forest, the world around them dissolving into a maze of shifting possibilities, each step pulling them deeper into the unknown.
