The Tower loomed above the Last City, its familiar glow offering a sense of security to those who looked up. But for Liv, the safety of the Tower was an illusion. Every corner, every shadow, felt like it was watching her, waiting for a moment of weakness. The Darkness had been relentless, and now it seemed to be shifting, growing more direct.

The whispers in her mind had stopped, but the silence was more unsettling. It was as if the Darkness was planning its next move. And Cayde, despite his outward humor, had grown more quiet. They hadn’t spoken much since the mission on Io, both of them haunted by the whispers that had tried to tear them apart.

Liv stared out over the City, her thoughts drifting to the figure she had seen before—the one that had appeared to her in the depth of her nightmares. It was real. And it was getting closer.

The Vanguard had called them in for another briefing. Zavala’s face was stern as always, Ikora focused as she laid out the next steps for the Guardians.

“We’ve been tracking increased Darkness activity near the edge of the system,” Ikora explained. “But this time, it’s not just the Hive or the Taken. Something else is moving out there.”

Cayde glanced at Liv, his expression unreadable. She knew he had been feeling the same presence, even if he hadn’t admitted it. But the Darkness wasn’t just a distant force anymore—it was here. And it was coming for them.

Zavala’s voice broke through her thoughts. “We need to be prepared for anything. Liv, Cayde—I’m assigning you to lead a recon team to the Reef. The Awoken have reported strange readings from one of their outermost planets. We need to know if this is connected to the growing presence of the Darkness.”

Liv nodded, though her mind was elsewhere. The Reef was where it had all started—where Cayde had met his fate. She had been working tirelessly to avoid that future, but now the timeline was beginning to converge.

As they prepared to leave, Cayde caught her arm. “Liv, you alright?”

She forced a smile, nodding. “Yeah. Just... thinking.”

“About that?” He tilted his head slightly, his usual playfulness returning for a moment.

Liv exhaled, the weight of everything they had been through heavy on her shoulders. “We’re getting close, Cayde. I can feel it. Whatever the Darkness is planning... it’s coming.”

Cayde’s expression shifted, his humor fading. “We’ll face it. Whatever it is.”

Liv wanted to believe that. She wanted to believe that everything she had done—everything she had fought for—would be enough. But deep down, she knew that something much darker awaited them.

The journey to the Reef was uneventful, but the moment they stepped off their ship onto the desolate planet, Liv felt it. The presence—the one that had haunted her dreams—was here.

The team spread out, scanning the area for signs of activity, but Liv’s attention was drawn to a distant ridge. The air was heavy, and the usual hum of the Ghosts was absent. Something was wrong.

“Cayde,” Liv whispered, her hand instinctively resting on her weapon. “Do you feel that?”

Cayde nodded, his hand resting on his hand cannon. “Yeah. It’s too quiet.”

Before they could move, a figure emerged from the shadows ahead. It was the same person Liv had seen before, cloaked in darkness, their features obscured by the black shroud that clung to them like mist.

“You’ve come a long way,” the figure said, their voice cold and distant, but familiar—like the whispers that had tormented her. “But it doesn’t matter. You can’t change what’s coming.”
