The haunting vision of Cayde’s death still clung to Liv like a shadow as she pushed forward with the fireteam through the twisting paths of the Black Garden. The atmosphere was thicker now, as if the very air was saturated with Darkness, and the oppressive energy pressed against her, tugging at her thoughts.
But Liv had no choice but to move forward. They were nearing the heart of the Garden, where the secrets of the Darkness—and the answers she needed—waited.
The fireteam stepped into an open space, the twisting stone structures of the Black Garden parting to reveal a vast chamber bathed in a strange, shifting light. It was unlike anything Liv had ever seen—columns of glowing, dark energy spiraled up into the sky, and the ground seemed to pulse as if alive, responding to the presence of the Guardians.
“We’re close,” Faelyn murmured, his voice tense. “I can feel it.”
Cayde’s hand hovered over his Golden Gun, his sharp eyes scanning the horizon. “This place gives me the creeps. Feels like we’re walking into a trap.”
Liv’s heart raced as they pressed forward. She could sense it too—something was waiting for them. She couldn’t shake the feeling that they weren’t alone.
They approached a large pedestal at the center of the chamber, where a massive crystalline structure pulsated with dark energy. The hum of power radiated from it, and as they drew closer, Liv felt a deep, unnatural pull—something urging her to step forward.
“This must be it,” Faelyn said, his voice barely a whisper. “The heart of the Garden.”
Before Liv could respond, a voice echoed through the chamber. Deep, twisted, and filled with malice.
“You think you can defy destiny, Guardian?”
The air around them shifted, and from the shadows, the same figure Liv had encountered in the Tower emerged. His dark form seemed to flicker between the shadows, never fully solid. His glowing eyes locked onto Liv, as if he could see straight through her.
“It’s you,” Liv whispered, her hand tightening on her weapon.
The figure chuckled darkly. “Yes. It is I—the one who has watched you since you first arrived in this time, this place. You think you can save Cayde-6, but you are only walking deeper into the trap.”
Faelyn raised his weapon, his body tense. “What do you want?”
The figure ignored him, his gaze fixed on Liv. “I am here to offer you one final chance, Guardian. Walk away. Accept the fate that has been written, and perhaps the Darkness will show mercy.”
Liv’s heart pounded. She knew what he was doing. He was trying to break her, to make her give in to the fear that had been clawing at her since she arrived. But she wasn’t going to let him.
“You’re wrong,” Liv said, her voice strong despite the fear creeping up her spine. “I can change things. I will save him.”
The figure’s eyes glowed brighter, and the very air seemed to tremble with his dark power. “You cannot change what is written. His fate is sealed, Guardian. And if you continue down this path, you will only doom him—and yourself.”
Cayde stepped forward, his voice sharp and defiant. “I don’t know who you think you are, buddy, but you clearly don’t know me. I don’t do fate. And neither does Liv.”
The figure’s gaze flicked to Cayde, his expression unreadable. “You speak with confidence, yet your future is the most fragile of all. The moment of your death is approaching, and nothing can stop it.”
Liv’s hands trembled. She couldn’t let this happen. She wouldn’t. But how? How could she fight something that seemed so inevitable?
The figure raised a hand, and the ground beneath them began to shake. The dark energy from the crystalline structure swirled around them, pulling at their Light, making the air thick with tension.
“You cannot defy the Darkness,” the figure said, his voice echoing ominously. “But I will give you one last chance, Guardian. If you leave this place now, the Darkness will spare you. But if you stay, you will be consumed by the fate you fear.”
Liv felt the weight of his words pressing down on her. She glanced at Cayde, her heart aching. The vision of his death played over and over in her mind. Was it possible that he was right? Was she only making things worse by trying to change the future?
But then Cayde’s voice cut through the doubt, strong and unwavering.
“Don’t listen to him, Liv. This guy’s all talk. He’s just trying to scare you.”
Liv took a deep breath, steadying herself. Cayde was right. The Darkness was trying to make her doubt herself, to make her give in. But she wasn’t going to let it. Not now.
She looked up at the figure, her eyes blazing with determination. “I won’t walk away. I came here to change the future, and I’m not leaving until I do.”
The figure’s glowing eyes narrowed, his form shifting as if he was growing more unstable. “Then you have sealed your fate.”
With a wave of his hand, the dark energy from the crystal surged, and the ground beneath them cracked open. From the chasm, twisted, shadowy creatures began to emerge, their forms writhing with the corrupt power of the Darkness.
Cayde immediately sprang into action, his Golden Gun blazing as he fired shot after shot at the approaching creatures. “Here we go! Let’s show them what we’re made of!”
Liv felt the surge of adrenaline as she raised her hand cannon and opened fire. The creatures were fast and relentless, but Liv’s Light burned brightly, cutting through them with each shot.
Faelyn unleashed a devastating storm of Arc energy, clearing a path through the enemies as they advanced toward the crystal.
But no matter how many creatures they destroyed, more kept coming. The Darkness was throwing everything it had at them, as if trying to break their spirits.
“We need to destroy that crystal!” Faelyn shouted over the roar of battle. “It’s the source of their power!”
Liv nodded, her eyes locked on the massive structure pulsing with dark energy at the center of the chamber. If they could destroy it, they might be able to disrupt the Darkness’s hold on the Garden.
“We need to get closer!” Liv shouted.
The fireteam pushed forward, fighting their way through the swarm of enemies. Liv’s heart raced as they neared the crystal, the air around them thick with the oppressive energy of the Darkness.
But then, as they closed in, the figure reappeared, his form solidifying before the crystal.
“You cannot win,” he said, his voice cold and final. “This is where your journey ends.”
Liv raised her weapon, her Light blazing with determination. “We’ll see about that.”
The final battle erupted in a blur of chaos and Light. The figure unleashed waves of dark energy, his form shifting and flickering as he attacked. The ground trembled beneath them, and the creatures swarmed from every corner of the chamber.
Cayde moved like lightning, his Golden Gun flaring as he fired off shot after shot, cutting through the enemy forces with deadly precision. Faelyn’s Arc energy crackled through the air, creating a storm of destruction as he held off the advancing creatures.
Liv’s heart pounded as she focused on the figure before the crystal. She could feel the Darkness pulling at her, trying to drag her into despair, but she fought back with everything she had. The Light inside her burned brighter, pushing back against the oppressive force of the Garden.
The figure’s eyes glowed with fury as he unleashed another wave of dark energy, but Liv was ready. She raised her hand cannon, her Light flaring as she fired a shot directly into the heart of the crystal.
The shot connected, and for a brief moment, everything seemed to freeze.
The crystal shattered, the dark energy swirling around it collapsing in on itself. The creatures screeched as the Darkness lost its hold on them, and the figure’s form flickered, his power draining away.
Liv’s breath caught in her throat as the figure staggered, his eyes locking onto hers one final time.
“You cannot escape fate, Guardian,” he whispered, his voice fading as his form dissolved into the shadows.
And then, he was gone.
